Kibitzer's Corner
Sep-19-07  Autoreparaturwerkbau: 39...g5 stops any white's ideas of breaking the kingside.

Then triangulates to secure the best spot for king and plays 44...Nxc4, which (with careful play) secures to have a tempo when both make queening.

After 65...Qxg4 i would feel safe to resign against Tal. But as a patzer i might play on - just to make sure. :)

4tmac: You can't blame white for playing on in this tricky ending. 66. Q-f1+! sets a trap

. ... K-c3? 67. Q-f3+!! draws

4tmac: There are similar draws on the next move as well. Finally, on move 69 black can advance his pawn. You guessed it, with blacks QUEEN toward the edge of the board and his pawns restricting his KING, White has a perpetual after 69. ... e4?

4tmac: BLACK TO PLAY & WIN (move 74)

. ... Q-e4! (centralize that queen!) The threat was Q-f1+! and even K-g4 allows perpetual (with no help from the queen on the edge and the constant stalemate threat hanging over black)

4tmac: These guys played this ending very well. Leave it to Tal to understand an ending that requires great tactical calculation. I couldn't have followed this without a tablebase.
Mar-19-12  screwdriver: Tal is known for his knockout middle games, but he's very good the endings as well.
