Apr-05-03  crafty: 26. ♘g5 ♘d5 27. exd5 ♗xg5 28. ♗xb4+ ♕xb4 29. ♕xb4+   (eval 6.49; depth 12 ply; 100M nodes)
Aug-13-03  Shadout Mapes: 25...Kg6 26.Nh5+ Kh6 27.Qf3+ Kxh5 28.Qg3+ Kh6 29.Qg6# All forced, undoubtedly easy for Tal to find.

These are the best way to sharpen your tactics, look at positions like these and let the variations flow.

Aug-13-03  mkdir: out of nowhere TAL uncorks Bxf7!! to win the game...typical TAL

  Honza Cervenka: <Shadout Mapes <25...Kg6 26.Nh5+ Kh6 27.Qf3+ Kxh5 28.Qg3+ Kh6 29.Qg6#>>

There are some typos in your line. It could have been 25...Kg6 26.Nh4+ Kh5 27.Qf3+ Kxh4 28.Qg3+ Kh5 29.Qg5#. Of course, the idea is correct.:-)

Aug-14-03  Shadout Mapes: True, as i mentioned, i was just looking at the position and trying to see how far I could get, thanks for correcting the line.
Mar-12-04  d4Nf6Bg5: I missed this combo at first because I assumed 23....Qa4- but then I realized this is impossible because of 24.Bb3 Qxe4 25.Bxf7 wins aleast the exchange, i think.
Mar-12-04  amdocs: If 23.... Qa4 possible also 24.b3 Qxa3 25.Ra1 Qb2 25.Bc3 and the Queen is caught.
Mar-12-04  slylonewolf: amdocs:- you mean 24...Qxa2 :)
Good line, I had missed that too if you hadn't pointed it out.

Honza Cervenka: <If 23.... Qa4 possible also 24.b3> Hmmm, what about 24...Qa3 instead of 24...Qxa2?
Mar-12-04  DWINS: amdocs, In your line, what does White do if Black doesn't take the pawn and instead plays 24...Qa3?
Mar-12-04  karlzen: 24.b3? is not so good as black escapes with at least equality after the proposed 24...Qa3. <d4Nf6Bg5> had it the right way. 24...Qa3 25.Bb3 Qxe4 26.Bxf7+! Kh8 27.Bxe8 (27.Ng5) Rxe8 28.Qb3 h6 (to stop Ng5) 29.Be3 (activating the B and guarding the c5 square so Rxa6 is possible) 29...Nb8 (defending a6 - 29...Ra8 30.Qe6) 30.Re6! Nfd7 (? - everything else also loses of course, but this is the most beautiful) Now it's time for a quiz. What's white's best move? 31.Rxe7! (Rc7) 31...Rxe7 32.Rc8+ Kh7 33.Bg5!! the rook has no squares and taking the B would result in a fork on king and queen. 33...Nc6 (33...Qb1+ 34.Rc1) 34.Qg8+ Kg6 35.Bxe7 Nxe7 36.Qe8+ Kf6 37.Rd8! Nc5 38.Rd6+ Ne6 39.Qf8+ picking up both knights with a quick mate to follow.

Sneaky: For those who can't get enough tactics puzzles, here's another one from a Russian web site. http://www.satrancokulu.com/ders/im... Very easy, but pretty.
Mar-12-04  Onom: I thought this was just a quest to ensure stealing Black's Queen. Isn't it trapped now after 25. A3

I don't know. I'm not nearly as good as any of the other players here. Why wouldn't that work.? :)

Mar-12-04  mikhs: what about: 26.Ng5 Nd5 27.Ne6+ Kf8 28.Nxd8 Rxd8 29.exd5 (threatning 30.d6+)
Mar-12-04  sleepkid: <Onom:> 25. a3 isn't as good as the move chosen in the game. If 25. a3 Black, though uncomfortable, sneaks the Queen away via b5 -

After the move chosen in the game 26. Ng5 Nd5 27. exd5 Bxg5 28. Bxb4+ Qxb4 29. Qxb4+ - - black has nothing left to play for, which is why he resigned.

Mar-12-04  rochade123: 23....Qa4
Mar-12-04  patzer2: If 23...Qa4, then 24. Bb3 Qxe4 25. Bxf7+ Kh8 (if 25...Kxf7, then 26. Ng5+ ) 26. Bxe8 Rxe8 27. Rxa6 appears to leave White with a fairly straight forward win (up the exchange and a pawn).
Mar-12-04  patzer2: If 23...Bb4, then 24. Bxf7! Kxf7 (if 24...Kh8 or 24...Kf8, then 25. Bxe8 ) 25. Qb3+ Nd5 (if 25...King moves, then 26. BxB+ ) 26. Qxd5+ Ke7 27. Rxa6! Qxa6 28. Bxb4+ Kf6 29. Rc6+ Qxc6 30. Qxc6+ looks to be decisive.
Mar-12-04  kevin86: 26 ♘g5 threatens two mates, black can forstall with a suicide move by the knight, but his game is hopeless.
Mar-12-04  Kefka: anything wrong with the following line.. 26. Ng5 Nd5 27. exd5 h6 28. d6 hxg5 29. dxe7 Rxe7 ..black will still be a night down but he wont lose his queen at least
Mar-12-04  sleepkid: <Kefka:> In your line after 29. ...Rxe7 30. Bxb4 wins the exchange with a crushing position. Resignable. (i.e. 30. ...Qb5 31. Bxe7+ Kxe7 32. Qe6+ Kf8 33. Rc8)
Mar-12-04  beenthere240: The first move in the combo 23 B-d2 was the hard one to find (for me at least) but it's critical since it opens the way for the Knight.
Mar-12-04  alphee: 23. Bxf7+ gives almost the same result. Is 23. Bd2 worth doing?
Mar-12-04  sleepkid: <alphee:> 23. Bxf7+ is premature, since the g5 square is occupied, White's attack stalls. 23. Bd2 attacking the queen frees the g5 square for the knight and gains the neccesary tempo to make the attack work.
Mar-12-04  alphee: <sleepkid:> got it! Thanks
