Kibitzer's Corner
Aug-22-03  Brian Watson: How about 20...Rg5?
Aug-23-03  bishop: 20...Rg5 21.Qxb7 and I think White will be able to defend himself. But what in the world was Tal thinking when he made his King vulnerable by 22...g5? I mean you can't stir up an attack when it's not there. The most important factors in the positon where the open e-file and the respective pawn majorities. Tal neglected to use his queenside pawn majority and did not pay sufficient attention to the open file, while Ivanovic used his extra pawn on the kingside and the open file to score a nice win.
Aug-23-03  Brian Watson: But 20..Rg5 21.Qxb7 Bd5

22...g5 looks desparate. But black has to do something about the threatened skewer Bc4. 22...Re5 would lose a pawn to 23.Bc4+ followed by Rxe5

Aug-23-03  bishop: I believe you are right about 20...Rg5 21.Qxb7? Bd5 I thought that 22.Bc4 might hold but that runs into ...Rg1+ and mate next move. Maybe 22...Be6 holds everything without weakening the kingside.
Aug-23-03  ughaibu: Instead of 21.Qb7 what's wrong with f4?
Aug-23-03  Brian Watson: Right, and then 21...Bd5 fails to the Bc4 cross-pin . . . neat.
Mar-13-06  Benzol: Tal's 22...g5 seems a desperate attempt at counter-play and in the end his opponents f-pawn proves his undoing. 22...♔h8 might be a better defensive move.

Honza Cervenka: 21...Re5 with next 22...Rf8 looks fine for black.

  MissScarlett: <BCM> June 1979, p.256:

<Tal continued to lead the tournament until the very last round. His final game was played a day early to allow Ivanovic to travel home for another event. It proved to be the biggest surprise of the whole tournament, with Tal almost unrecognisable as the player who had dominated the event to this stage.>

There was a rest day between the 16th and 17th rounds (or one to finish adjourned games), so I'll change the date to March 15th.
