Mar-12-12 | | Poulsen: Saw the solution almost right away - only spend 2 sec. on moves with bishop and rook. Also - as a sideeffect - almost right away concluded, that blacks last move had to be a knigts move! Strange how a chessmind works! |
Mar-12-12 | | pedro99: Please can we have something other than a back-ranker once in a while? |
Mar-12-12 | | kevin86: I was looking for something loike Qd7-then I saw the reverse x-ray attack Qf8+ black must take and the rook retakes with a mate. A typical queen sac-simple Monday. Oh,yes,it is raining and depressing-also typical for Monday. |
Mar-12-12 | | agb2002: White has a bishop and a pawn for a knight.
Black threatens 28... Nxa8.
White has already one piece attacking along Black's back rank. Therefore, increase the attacking forces decisively with 28.Qf8+, and mate next. |
Mar-12-12 | | LoveThatJoker: <viking78> Well said. It is hard to know what was going through Black's ideas when he went for 27...Nb6?? Maybe he was in desperate time-trouble; maybe he cracked under the pressure of being on the defensive and maybe couldn't function right; or lastly, maybe he had a moment of chess-blindness and found the whopper that was 27...Nb6?? Possibly a combination of one with the other as well LTJ |

Mar-12-12 | | dragon player: Monday's easy:
28. Qf8+ Rxf8
Forced
29. Rxf8#
Time to check

yeah, right
1/1 now |

Mar-12-12 | | geeker: X-ray!
Not that hard, but a pretty motif. |

Mar-12-12 | | LoveThatJoker: <David2009> Thanks for the kind mention! LTJ |

Mar-12-12 | | Gilmoy: <18.Qxf3 Bxf6> I detest the Spanish when it ends up unclear like this. I always hope my fishy foes deviate early. <20.Nc2!> But this instantly morphs it into a Sicilian Sveshnikov, with White hammering the weak d5-square. That's some clarity! In that light, <14..c6> looks two-edged. I think that's the Chigorin line in Spanish, opening c for some counterplay. But against White's b2-c3 pawn structure, there <is> no counterplay on c: even a b4-push never creates a target. Egad: This suggests that openings are like nodes in a graph, and there exist edges between them, denoting possible tunnelings (that leave your opponent completely out of position). Beyond your book memorization, there exists a yet higher layer of structure. My C.H.O.D, it's full of five-stars. With some relief, WBR is still WBR, a familiar old haunt. How do I force it, let me count the ways: 1.He does it to himself ... |

Mar-12-12 | | frogbert: here's a position from the ongoing game caruana-sokolov (also a ruy): click for larger viewQ: white wants to play Be3 - but why does that take two moves, not one? sometimes i think *this* is the kind of puzzles i need to solve in order not to blunder to some tactic... |

 | | chrisowen: The doors open for queen along back rank 28.qf8+ hellfire nb6 lame. Network queen in my heart I know black cant hold abreadth in king rook of fresh air. It you in lip opposition to quaffable f5 white has ascendancy it jig in, not b6 a crownest in escry it sane puzzle got breaker it f8 ewest I mate rxf8 rxf8#. Ph6 either stops in ko fleet of foot would be it f8 in having buy it life in tease also manage white Ricardi neat paints a good picture it nb6 in off. |
Mar-12-12 | | stst: might be the easiest monday:
28.Qf8 Rxf8 (only way to delay mate)
29.Rxf8# no rescue |
Mar-12-12 | | YouRang: Darn it! I jumped at the first 'solution' I saw without thinking it through. What I thought I saw: 28.Qf7(?), thinking I either checkmate (if black takes my queen, e.g. 28...Qxf7 29.Rxd8 Qg8 30.Rxg8#, or 28...Qd7 29.Qg8+ Rxg8 30.Rxg8#), or otherwise I win black's queen (29.Qxc7 ). What I overlooked: With 28...Nxa8, black takes my rook AND defends his queen. I lose. :-( |
Mar-12-12 | | Crispy Seagull: Qf8+. "Very easy," indeed. Probably the easiest puzzle position I've seen on this site. |
Mar-12-12 | | Kingfischers: is this really supposed to be a puzzle? if you cant see the answer to this in 10 seconds maybe its time to look for another hobby |
Mar-12-12 | | fcsca: No criticar... es un rompecabezas, si les resulta facil o dificil, eso no importa.... lo importante es que todos los dias tenemos un rompecabezas diferente para pasar un rato agradable... |
Mar-12-12 | | LoveThatJoker: <frogbert> If 1. Be3 Bxh2+! wins a pawn as 2. Kxh2 (2. Kh1 Qh4 is excellent for Black) 2...Qh4+ and 3...Qxe4. LTJ |
Mar-12-12 | | frogbert: ltj, exactly - and therefore white achieves Be3 how? :o) |
Mar-12-12 | | LoveThatJoker: <frogbert> Via 1. Nxd6! Qxd6 2. Be3. LTJ |
Mar-12-12 | | frogbert: yup, or what caruana happened to play: 1. Bg5 f6 (closing the diagonal) 2. Be3 |
Mar-12-12 | | LoveThatJoker: <frogbert> Wow...That's a pretty stylish manoeuvre from Caruana! Thanks for posting this!
LTJ |
Mar-12-12 | | frogbert: you're welcome! when i watched caruana play Bg5 today i said to myself "now, why did he do that instead of simply Be3 directly?" - and sure enough, there was a good reason to. :o) |
Mar-12-12 | | LoveThatJoker: <frogbert> Wow! I was just going to ask you when the game was played, but then figured that I could just type 'caruana' and 'sokolov' in the search portion of the homepage. Glad to know it was played today though!
I'll be going to 2700chess.com later on to see if they have the game; unless it is already here on CG of course. LTJ |
Mar-12-12 | | LoveThatJoker: I see it's here already! Great job by CG in having these games already on their database. F Caruana vs I Sokolov, 2012
LTJ |
Mar-12-12 | | 1.e4effort: This is the easiest POTD I've seen on this site. However, I want to add that I appreciate the more experienced and higher rated players taking the time to patiently explain how the mate will work. |
