Kibitzer's Corner
Jun-07-04  iron maiden: Exciting, aggressive play by the young prodigy! A great demonstration of Carlsen's fighting spirit. :-)
Jun-07-04  acirce: You can't blame him for wanting to draw as Black against an opponent this highly rated. ;)
Jul-13-04  kurathedog: Brilliant to work this to a draw.
Clearly Magnus saw:

Nxe6 a5
NxD8!!! B-e7
NxC6!! 0-0
NxA5 R-b8

And black is down a queen and a knight and the only compensation is that black got to castle and partially open the A-file.

I am suprised that Calson saw this and was able to negotiate a draw. Maybe Kvisvik didn't have the confidence to go for it.

I am going to share this at my next chess club meeeting!

Nov-08-04  acirce: A draw in 6 moves is called a "GM norm". You need 3 of those to become a GM. This was young Carlsen's second one, Carlsen vs S Rukovci, 2001 was the first. The third and final seems to be missing from this base.
Nov-08-04  iron maiden: <acirce> So has FIDE awarded you your title yet? ;-)
Nov-08-04  clocked: <acirce> don't bring religion to this page too!

tpstar: Personally, I enjoy the creation of this clever discussion, as well as the inevitable evolution. Gives me a Big Bang.

Young MC should play at least as many moves as his age, IMHO.

Nov-08-04  acirce: <Young MC should play at least as many moves as his age> Not possible, that would violate the Law of Small Numbers.
Nov-08-04  MoonlitKnight: The only thing I'm still wondering is: Why is this game in a game collection?!
Dec-15-05  SickedChess: <MoonlitKnight> maybe marianao is kramnikĀ“s fan and likes shortest draws :)
May-05-16  Sergash: As opposed to the game Carlsen vs S Rukovci, 2001, same lenght but was during round 6 of 9 at the Norway Open Championship earlier that same year, I can understand the actual draw : that was the 9th and last game of a vewy difficult tournament (Carlsen did not win any of the 9 games of the event, but managed to draw 5 times, including against IM Petrov M Petrov vs Carlsen, 2001 who was rated 2425 at the time, while Carlsen was 2064.

I assume he was eager to end the event.

As for Kvisvik, he is a Novegian player born in 1984 (he was 16 or 17 at that time) who later became FIDE master in 2012.

May-05-16  Sergash: <2...e6> Before this game, Carlsen had played the Sicilian only once, against Richard Flores earlier that same year. He had then played 2...d6.

<5.Bd3> In the first game of the present event, Carlsen had plaved 5.Nc3 as white here (Carlsen vs E Vegh, 2001). He was possibly trying mimic that game as Black?

<6.Bb5+> 6.Nc3 a6 7.0-0 Qc7 8.f4 Be7 9.Kh1 Nbd7 10.Qe2 0-0 11.Bd2 = Vassily Smyslov vs Ilia Abramovich Kan, Moscow Championship (USSR) 1942, 1-0.

I assume Kvisvik played his move and then offered the draw. If Carlsen finished the tournament with 2.5 points out of a possible 9, Kvisvik ended with only 1.0 point, meaning before the draw seen here, he was only 0.5 point out of 8! He too had probably lost his fighting spirit by then...
