Nov-06-05 | | patzer2: Seems to me that instead of resigning, Black should play 30...Qxb3+! 31. Kd2 Qxb2+ 32. Ke3 Qe2#. Perhaps there is an error here in recording who actually won the game? |

Nov-06-05 | | iron maiden: What does Black play after 31. Kb1? |
|
Nov-07-05 | | patzer2: <Iron Maiden> After 31. Kb1, Black can resign. My previous post is totally in error, as 30. Ra1 wins and the resignation for Black is appropriate. So, Kaidanov did a great job as White in winning in the Frankenstein-Dracula Variation of the Vienna. |

Too bad Bareev missed 23. ... ♘xb3+! 24. ♔d1 ♗xe4 25. fxe4 ♘d4. He also skipped 25. ... ♖a1+ 26. ♔d2 ♕b4+ 27. c3 ♕xb3! 28. ♗xe5+ ♗xe5 29. ♔e3 ♕xb2 30. ♕xf3 ♗xc3. |

Dec-14-07 | | somitra: Note that 26 Bc3 loses to Ra1+ and Bh6+#.
I guess black had lost by move 11 itself, when he was down an exchange and the precarious position of the black king. Any comp evaluations to confirm/refute this ? |
|
Dec-14-07 | | Manic: <somitra> If you click on "find similar games" you can see that the line played seems to be all theory. At move 11 in the database there are 87 games with this line where white has won 46%, draws are 10.3% and black has won 43.7%. Whether the variation is sound or not for black I don't know, but it seems to be playable. |

 | | alexmagnus: I once heard that correspondence players "overanalyzed" the Frankenstein-Dracula-Variation and came to conclusion that white wins. But I don't know the analysis itself. |

Dec-14-07 | | eaglewing: While 26. Bxb6+ is convincing and I would like to consider 25. ... Bh6+ and 25. ... ed, I do not see the mate (or win) remarked by <somitra> in the position after: 25.Bxd4 Qb4 26. Bc3 Ra1+ 27. Kd2 Bh6+ 28. Re3, which could develop in the variant given by <wouldpusher> (25.Bxd4 Ra1+ 26. Kd2 Qb4+ 27. Bc3 (instead of c3) Bh6+ 28. Re3), too. After 28. Re3 the black Queen is under attack, so no simple win. |

Dec-14-07 | | MaxxLange: <somitra> evaluating this line is not that easy |
|
Dec-14-07 | | D4n: White tries everything to attack F7, and ends the game on a well placed Rook (a1). |
|
Dec-14-07 | | kevin86: An odd game,to say the least! White captures the rook in the northwest corner and wins! Black's counterplay looks strong, but despite the mate threats, runs out of gas. White will be up the exchange and two pawns. |

Dec-14-07 | | lies: What was the response to 19. Bxf4 ? |
|
Dec-14-07 | | Riverbeast: <What was the response to 19. Bxf4 ?> Good question.
I suspect after 19. Bxf4 black would try 19...g5 20. Bd2 g4 21. fxg4 hxg4 22. Qxg4 Bf6. The queen is in a funny spot and still has to watch g2...maybe black threatens ...Rh7 and ...Rg7. Meanwhile white has trouble developing with Ne2 because of ...f3 In this line if 23. c3 Nxb3+ 24. axb3 Qe6 threatening 25...Rg8. Do these lines look accurate? Of course I'm not as strong as these guys and I don't have a computer program, so please correct me or expand on these lines if necessary... But given the fact that this idea looks strong to me, I wonder if instead of 18...Kc7, black should have played 18...g5 right away and gone for similar play, before white could develop fully. |

Dec-14-07 | | wouldpusher: <lies> <What was the response to 19. Bxf4?> 19. ♗xf4?! ♘xb3+ 20. axb3 ♖a8 21. ♔b1 ♕b4 If in that line White plays 20. cxb3 then 20. ... ♕c5+ 21. ♔b1 ♕d4 |

Dec-14-07 | | keklik: I like when grandmasters play lines typical for rookie players. And they calculate, calculate, calculate... But, how to explain the pun? Should it be 'Show must go on'? Or 'Radio Ga-Ga'? Or even 'Living on my own'? |

Feb-29-08 | | D.Observer: The queen was trapped. Just like what NN did on NN vs De Riviere, 1867. |
