fm avari viraf: During my Chess coaching & lectures, I often quote this beautiful game. The credit should go the Masters who conceive such beautiful ideas & one must enjoy their legacy!
Mar-20-07  slomarko: Reti's mate is more difficult and more beatifull than Schulten-Horwitz, Maczuski-Kolisch because he mates with the bishop.
Apr-10-07  Amarande: Another similar position (which arose from a casual game of mine as Black, that started with the Grob)

Here 11 c3?? runs into the same mate (in fact, complete with Bishop variation just like Reti!), and even on 11 Ne2 Qd1+ anyway with major advantage (12 Kxd1 Bh3+)

Dec-02-07  noiselesion: There is no doubt that this, along with the game where Legal administers his brand of mate, are among the top best games ever played.
Mar-28-08  Marmot PFL: larry Evans said this was probably the most famous double check ever played.
Mar-30-08  7Heaven: how ironic..an expert in openings loses in a miniature (by another expert in openigs)!
Sep-12-08  just a kid: Love the game! This is maybe my favorite miniaure.
Dec-03-08  WhiteRook48: Double check!!!! How did Tartakower not see that coming? (Bg5+)
Dec-09-08  Oliveira: <WhiteRook48>
It was a blitz game: 10 secs a move.
Dec-23-08  WhiteRook48: Almost as famous as the immortal game. I bet Tartakower's history is blanked out by this game
Jan-07-09  WhiteRook48: why is only 8. 0-0-0 in the Sacrifice Explorer? Shouldn't 9. Qd8+ also be in the Sac Explorer?
Jan-31-09  WhiteRook48: after seeing this game over and over again, it's starting to become boring
Jun-04-09  heizfeld: 5..e5 was a bad move. usually Nxe4 or e6 has to be played with good reason. Tartakower left the carokann main line and was too creative, maybe unconcentrated. -and payed for it

but by the way: tartakower also won in 11 moves, so what? (J Perlis vs Tartakower ostende 1907)

Sep-12-09  rodantero: Chernev write in his book that black resigned after white 10th move.
Sep-12-09  Cercatore: omg... owned
Oct-11-09  vsadek: Beautiful miniature game. I discovered it only today.
Mar-12-10  morphyesque: If there are any British readers who are as old as me (born 1946), you may remember a series of animated films originally shown in the late 50s on tv by the BBC (then later in the early 60s by ITV) entitled "Chess Miniatures".This was a series of 39 games devised by one Horace Shepherd and photographed by Harry Long.In the films the pieces appeared to move by themselves and this particular game was filmed together with Gibaud vs Lazard (Paris 1924) which went 1.d4 nf6 2.nd2 e5 3.d4xe5 ng4 4.h3?? ne6 5.Resigns.It apparantly was the shortest game recorded between masters in tournament competition.Horace entitled this particular film "A Bolt from the Blue".
Apr-28-10  Cibator: <morphyesque:> Yep, I remember that series. They'd superimpose little arrows on the board to show just how one side or the other was attacking the important squares. The knight's move was a bit creepy - it sort of faded out from its starting square and materialised in ghostly fashion on the arrival one. At the end the mated king would be shown lying on its side as if after resignation.

(But that Gibaud-Lazard game has since been shown to be spurious, according to the Oxford Companion to Chess. And Horace also included in the series a supposed game by Napoleon - guess he didn't like to let boring old facts get in the way of a nice snappy game!)

Oct-06-10  sevenseaman: 3 pages of comments on this miniature!
Dec-03-10  Llawdogg: Very nice.
Jan-22-11  k.khalil: That was a stealth deadly brutal attack !!
Feb-03-11  dolyasergey: 10.Ke8 11.Rd8#

LIFE Master AJ: My annotations of this game.
Apr-14-11  Mozart72: Reti's 75% win probability in move 11 and Tartakower's 87.50% win probability in move 10 shows that the final score should have been 0-1.

OhioChessFan: I hope you aren't going to put this nutjob win probability stuff on every game on this site.
