Mar-20-08  Wengsta123: Great game. Especially with the checkmate. I love checkmates.
Aug-04-08  zooter: Easy start of the week.

29.Qxf8+ Rxf8(forced) 30.Rxf8#

Not really a queen sacrifice as the mate is forced. I wonder how Anderssen lost like this though

Bishoprick: Even Anderssen had bad days!
Aug-04-08  dzechiel: White to play. Material even. "Very Easy."

It doesn't get much easier:

29 Qxf8+ Bxf8 30 Rxf8#

Makes you wonder what Anderssen's last move was. Time to check.

Aug-04-08  dzechiel: This game was played less than a year before Anderssen's death. I'm guessing that he was past his prime when he played this game.
Aug-04-08  tjshann: Ya think?

He didn't resign after Qxf8+ Maybe it was 19th century blitz??

Peligroso Patzer: After 28. g4, Anderssen found the only way to save the h5-Knight ... walk straight into mate with 28. ... Rf8?!
Aug-04-08  lost in space: 29. Qxf8+ Bxf8 30. Rxf8#
Aug-04-08  Slurpeeman: I got it right away. In your face, PinnedPiece! =)) lol

A 1-2 days ago I got an idea. Some of CS's kibitzers are ex- (or current) tournament players who play (ed) against some wellknown people in the chess world. So why don't we deveote a section of the Web-site to kibitzers' games with Mad Dogs and the like?

Aug-04-08  zenpharaohs: dzechiel: "This game was played less than a year before Anderssen's death. I'm guessing that he was past his prime when he played this game."

Well there is that, but there is also this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q6nU...

Despite his serious illness, Tal beat Kasparov only a few days before he died.

Aug-04-08  MaxxLange: "Monday Morning/So good to me..."
Aug-04-08  Kasputin: The mate in 2 starts with 29. Qxf8+
Aug-04-08  Shinermatt: Too easy for Monday.
Aug-04-08  ahmadov: One cannot believe Anderssen could lose this way...
Aug-04-08  Ridos: According to this website: http://www.endgame.nl/wfairs.htm Anderssen was sick:

"Paris 1878"
"The revival of France after the Franco-Prussian war was demonstrated by a world exhibition... The ill Anderssen would die the next year."

Aug-04-08  deadlysin: easy, but a bit too easy

An Englishman: Good Evening: Wilfried Paulsen did a lot of things right in this game. By starting with the Van't Kruijs Opening, he kept the game closed. Then by transposing to a modern formation of the English (with e3 and Nge2 and d4), he seized the greater share of the center. Next, he saddled Black with a Bishop limited by his own pawns, and exploited the hole at e6. Having accumulated a series of small advantages a la Steinitz, he launched the attack on the King side. Granted, Anderssen was ill, but let's give the lesser Paulsen some credit for a good game.
Aug-04-08  Alphastar: Hi

A quick glance at the position tells me 1. Qxf8+ Bxf8 2. Rxf8# is mate. Pretty straightforward, even for a monday.

This'll be my last preparation for an OTB tournament starting today. www.onjk.nl if you want to follow my results (I play in the A-group).

Aug-04-08  chenturini: Adolf Anderssen die at March 13, 1878, and the game date is July 28, 1878. He isn't the black player. Is other with same last name.
Aug-04-08  lost in space: <Alphastar:>

Good luck for the tournament! Hope to see more of your games on the CG database soon.

Aug-04-08  FHBradley: He died March 13, 1879, not 1878. So it is the immortal Anderssen.
Aug-04-08  whiteshark: Easy finish.
The game itself looks kind of modern.
<20...Raf8> was clearly better.
Aug-04-08  Once: Isn't it reassuring when the first line you try is mate in two?

<tjshann> It used to be customary to "play to mate" as a mark of respect to your opponent. Resigning before mate deprived the other guy (and any audience) of the satisfaction of the finish. Not a custom that exists any more ...

The star of the show has to be white's king knight. He makes a remarkable journey - e2, c3, e4 (safe from capture because of the pin on the f7 rook), g5 (gaining a tempo by attacking the f7 rook) and finally the fabulous outpost of e6. Fitting that this knight should help deliver the final mate.

Aug-04-08  zooter: <Alphastar:> Good luck....make us all proud...!

Btw, I checked the website A-group and your name is not to be seen...mayeb it's still last years player list?
