Kibitzer's Corner
Jan-28-04  MoonlitKnight: Carlsen appearantly missed a mate in 7 or so with 26.R1c7!! I don't know the line, but Crafty can probably enlighten us.
Jan-28-04  WMD: Imagine missing a mate in 7! Young Carlsen should announce his retirement immediately.
Feb-26-04  Dick Brain: <MoonlitKnight>perhaps 26. R1c7! f6 27. Rxg7+! Bxg7 28. Qe6+ etc
Feb-27-04  BiLL RobeRTiE: 6...d6 looked unwise.
Feb-27-04  MoonlitKnight: <Dick Brain> Yes, that appears to be it. When the line was discovered during the game, most of the kibitzers on ICC thought he was going to find it. It would have been a beatiful mate.
May-09-04  Jack21221: There is absolutely no way I would have ever seen 12. Nd5 over the board, other than it would cost me a knight. Is that a part of opening theory, or did Magnus just come up with it?
May-12-04  awfulhangover: Not theory, he found it.
May-12-04  MoonlitKnight: It was enough to see that he got the passed pawn. Eventually, black would have to sacrifice a piece to stop it.
Jul-28-04  choumicha: And I thought my ChessBase Light was clever because it saw R1c7! Any way, some more comments and 4 questions on combinations are on http://choumicha.freeprohost.com/ch... By the way: I guess Carlsen didn't bother. The game was already won.
Nov-02-12  mike gambit: Dick brain: how could be a mate Rc7 after f6 there is no check in e6.
Oct-26-15  RKnight: <mike gambit> should read <Dick Brain>'s 2004 post a bit more closely: Qe6+ comes later, after 27 Rxg7+ Bxg7, and does indeed force mate. If 27 ... Kxg7, 28 Qxf6+ also forces mate.
