Kibitzer's Corner
Jan-10-06  morpstau: old lowenthal goes pawn grabbing and gets his rook snatched, another morphy triump.
Feb-19-06  Lupechmand: I think old Löwenthal feared losing the queen more: 34. ...Qh6 35. Rh8+ Kxh8 36. Qxh6+
Nov-02-06  tonsillolith: Wow Morphy made excellent use of his knight.
Nov-03-06  tonsillolith: Actually he might have made even better use of his major pieces at the end.

naresb: I think instead of 19... Nf8, had Black gone for 19... Bf8, he could have sound defence. The Bishop rather than Knight act good in such defence system.

P. Morphy rightly followed with 20. Bg3 and Black to further worsen his position replied with 20... BxBg3.

21. fxBg3 enabled Queen-Rook combination along 'f' file.

Apr-19-16  talhal20: In this game Morphy takes initiative all the time while JL keep defending which doesn't payo

It's unclear why the figures vary slightly.

  nizmo11: According <Sergeant in Morphy's Games of Chess> Loewenthal had pointed out a quicker win with 31.Rh5 Rg7 (31...Kf8 32.Rh8 Rg8 33.Qd6+) 32.Qh6 Kf8 33.Rg5

Also Sergeant on move 32: "32...Re4 would have prolonged the game, White would then have checked, exchanged Rooks, and won on his Pawn position."
This is correct if he meant the pawn endgame after 32...Re4 33.Qg5+ Qg7 34.Rxe4 dxe4 35.Qxg7.
after 32...Re4 33.Qg5+ Kh7 White should not exchange rooks but rather play 34.Qf5+ and Rxb7, Black could then indeed prolong the game. But perhaps Loewenthal after 24...Nf6?? was in no mood for that.
