this brings back memories of that book by R Fine. |
Nov-20-17 | | saturn2: QxR and knight fork on e6 leave white with advantage |
Nov-20-17 | | patzer2: A Knight fork combination beginning with 31. Qxf8+ +- (+4.93 @ 22 ply, Stockfish 8) solves today's easy Monday puzzle. The decisive mistake appears to be 25...f5?! allowing 26. Bf3 +- (+2.19 3 @ 28 ply, Stockfish 8) with a decisive weakening of Black's pawn structure.
Instead, 25...b6 26. Qg3 ± (+1.15 @ 27 ply, Stockfish 8) gives Black a fighting chance for a draw. For an early Black improvement, our Opening Explorer and Stockfish 8 engine indicate the more popular move 8...Qd6 as in the drawn game Kosteniuk vs Yifan Hou, 2013 improves Black's chances. |

Nov-20-17 | | TheBish: Black should have smelled a rat after White's 30th move. Instead, he said "Look, free piece! OK, I'll bite. Show me what you got. Ohhh... that..." |
Nov-20-17 | | claudi: 31. QXf8+ wins the rook and the game |
Nov-20-17 | | Oxspawn: I love Mondays too. I did not get it. I was yelling at white, 'Look out, you are going to be mated in one move', and 'Don't panic'. Then I panicked. |
Nov-20-17 | | morfishine: <31.Qxf6+> follwed by <32.Ne6+> forking and White is a solid exchange ahead winning ***** |
Nov-20-17 | | jffun1958: 31. QxRf8+ KxQf8 32. Ne6+
and White forks the black queen, winning a rook. |
Nov-20-17 | | Pasker: Easy but took some time for me because I was looking for a checkmate and couldn't find one. |

Nov-20-17 | | thegoodanarchist: They say that Banas went bananas after this loss. |
Nov-20-17 | | zb2cr: White wins a Rook with 31. Qxf8+, Kxf8; 32. Ne6+ forking the Black Queen and re-gaining the sacrificed Queen. |
Nov-20-17 | | kevin86: This one was simple, but not easy. Sac the queen , then regain it with a knight fork. |
Nov-20-17 | | AlicesKnight: Nice simple Monday - Qxf8+ Kxf8; Ne6+ forks the Q and leaves White a R up. |

 | | Check It Out: Banas should have smelled a rat after 30.Ree1, just letting the LSB go like that. After the combination, yes, Black is in dire straights, but I think that Magnus could probably win with the black side against a patzer (like me). |

Nov-20-17
 | | Bubo bubo: White wins a rook (and fights the threat of Qxg2#) by luring the black king into a fork: 31.Qxf8+ Kxf8 32.Ne6+ K~ 33.Nxg5. |

Nov-20-17 | | Abdunnaser: Why would black give up, there is not much difference in materialistic. |
Nov-20-17 | | Nullifidian: White wins a rook with 31. ♕xf8+ ♔xf8 32. ♘e6+ followed by 33. ♕xg5. |
Nov-21-17 | | patzer2: <Abdunnaser: Why would black give up, there is not much difference in materialistic.> White's position is worth more than the mere win of an exchange after 31. Qxf8+ Kxf8 32. Ne6+ followed by 33. Nxg5 +-. Coupled with the win of the exchange, White's passed d-pawn, more active pieces and a strong initiative against the weak Black King give the first player a clearly decisive position. After its best play line 32. Ne6+ Kf7 33. Nxg5 +- (+6.01 @ 32 ply, Stockfish 8), the computer assesses the position as the equivalent of White being up a Rook and a Pawn. |
