Nov-24-05  Benzol: Thanks for this one <Honza>. Looks like you just got caught in a bind that was too difficult to break.

OhioChessFan: Is 10.....e4 theory? I don't see the point in it. I don't think Black could hold anyway, but 31...Bxc4 would have saved the tempo needed to defend the h pawn.

Honza Cervenka: <Is 10.....e4 theory? I don't see the point in it.> 10...e4 is not theory. It was a momentary OTB idea of sac of Pawn with intention to spoil white's Kingside castling. Maybe it was not completely sound but it worked well in the game. After 17...Bxc3! black is okay. White cannot take the Bishop 18.bxc3 for 18...Rab8 19.Qb3 Qa5 20.Qc2 Qa3+ 21.Kd2 Rb2 pinning and winning the Queen.

After 31...Bxc4 32.bxc4 g6 33.Rb5 white wins the second pawn too.

Dec-28-05  szunzein: I love the imagination of Black in this game, but Smejkal stayed calm and just eat pawns...
Dec-28-05  pawntificator: Black was applying strong pressure until move 18 when he traded queens and dissolved tension, hoping for a good endgame with bishops.

I think and alternate move on move 18 could win.

Dec-28-05  szunzein: I think it's hard to find an alternative because the bishop is threatened,(?)

OhioChessFan: Interesting how the c4 capture leads to the b pawn falling. Did you smirk inwardly when you played Bxc3?

OhioChessFan: <Pawntificator>, Black looks fine to me at that point. Can anyone work out 24...a5 followed by Bc6?

Honza Cervenka: <Did you smirk inwardly when you played Bxc3?> Yes, it was very nice feeling for me to make such a move in a game with a GM. But the euphoria also a little bit suppressed my concentration and especially the last few moves were horrible from my part. Mr. Smejkal was very polite to me and made some kind remarks upon my play in the game, but the computer was not so courteous to me and gave "??" to my 13th move 13...Bb4+ (13...Rfd8 looks fine), which could have been busted (after 14.c3 c5) by 15.Qd5! Rad8 16.Bg5 or 15.Qd1 winning one of Bishops (15...Ba5 16.Qa4) - this possibility I have found without comp immediately after the game.

With more experiences and in more realistic mood I would have played simply 21...Bxd2+ with next 22...Bxe4 which is a dead draw - quite acceptable result with a player like Jan Smejkal. But the game was still playable until 28...a5? and 29...Ba6??

Dec-29-05  szunzein: What about 31-.....Bxc4 (?)

  Honza Cervenka: <What about 31-.....Bxc4 (?)> 31...Bxc4 32.bxc4 g6 33.Rb5 winning another Pawn.
Dec-29-05  szunzein: Well, I certainly notice that Black was losing another pawn, I just thought that with only the rooks on the board White task would be harder; then I was not thinking about 32-....g6 but instead, something like, say: 32-....c6(?)

Honza Cervenka: <szunzein> That ending would have been absolutely hopeless. 31...Bxc4 32.bxc4 c6 33.Rxh5 leaves black with two missing Pawns and Pb4 is still a hot candidate for death. Black has absolutely no counter-play as white King controls all fields for eventual invasion of black Rook on d-file and 33...Ra7 34.Rc5 Ra6 35.Kb3 Rb6 36.Ka4 will finish with next material losses for black soon. In fact, it is resignable even against any 3rd class player. To continue the play in such a position againtst GM would be quite inept.
Dec-29-05  szunzein: Well, to be honest, I also noticed that.
It was good to analize anyway.
