Honza Cervenka: 14.Qxd5 is pretty. If 14...Bxd5??, then 15.Nf6++ Kd8 16.Re8#. 16.Nf6+! is another master stroke. Was not Lasker white here after all? I know that he played in simuls with black pieces quite often and there were always many quite strong players in Prague but white's play here looks so Laskerish....:-)
Aug-16-06  Marvol: I think your concern is right. White is playing for tactical shots from the start, which would be typical of a player - and especially Lasker - in a simul against a weaker player.

Add to that the confident simplification to a pawn-up endgame which is also typical of Lasker.

Aug-16-06  Calli: The game is correct according to Whyld. Lasker not only lost this game, but could only score won 10 wins 5 losses and 10 draws in the simul held 4 Dec 1913 in Prague (Dobrusky)
Aug-16-06  Calli: Lasker took another beating that day in this game: Berla vs Lasker, 1913

Honza Cervenka: <The game is correct according to Whyld. Lasker not only lost this game, but could only score won 10 wins 5 losses and 10 draws in the simul held 4 Dec 1913 in Prague (Dobrusky)> Thanks for confirmation of this, <Calli>. Btw, Dobrusky was a famous Prague chess club founded in 1902 and named after Czech chess compositor and quite strong practical player Jan Dobrusky (1853-1907). Its members were many fine (though today completely forgotten) players. Mr. Riha was evidently one of them.:-)
Aug-17-06  Runemaster: 4...a6 looks dubious. Because this is not a Ruy Lopez and White has already played Nc3, the usual Ruy idea of ...dxc6/....Qd4 doesn't really work. Black was struggling right from the start.

Honza Cervenka: <Runemaster> It appears time to time even today at GM level, see http://www.chessgames.com/perl/ches... for a few examples. But you are right, it is inferior.

Honza Cervenka: Quite embarrasing for its reputation was especially the game Znosko-Borovsky vs Rubinstein, 1907
Aug-17-06  Calli: <Honza> Could not find anymore on this player. No first name or initial. The exact name is with mark on the R, Řiha in the book. Whyld also gives two more games from the simul that are not on CG. I will enter those in the next few days and submit. Finally, the source of this game is Casopis Ceskych Sachistu 1914, page 5. Perhaps, they tell something of the simul besides the game scores?

Honza Cervenka: <Calli> I guess that surname should be "Říha" (i.e. with mark not only on the R but also on the i). It is quite common Czech surname.
Dec-09-14  TheFocus: From a simul in Prague, Czechoslovakia, on December 4, 1913.

Lasker scored +10=10-5.
