Kibitzer's Corner
Jan-22-07  Karpova: Another success for Tatiana who almost outplayed Bologan! 46.Be1 would have been better:
46.Be1 Ne4 47.Rb3+ Ke2 48.Rb6 Ra7 49.Re6
The same opportunity arose again on the next move with 47.Be1 50.Ne5+ was interesting also though the black c- and d-pawns look threatening. Possible continuation: 50.Ne5+ Bxe5 51.fxe5 Ke3 52.Rxh6

Sure, both players were in time trouble. Then Tatiana kept the balance with 61.g4! securing the draw.

Peligroso Patzer: When following this game in progress a few days ago during its very interesting endgame phase, I thought that 61. g4 was the only move to draw. After spending a little more time analyzing the ending, I realize that 61. f6 would also have been sufficient to draw, for example: 61.f6 Ke5 62.Kb7 (or 62.f7 Rf8 63.g4 Kf4 64.Kd6 Ra8 [not 64...Kxg4?? 65.Ke7 Ra8 66.f8=Q and White wins!] 65.g5 hxg5 66.hxg5 Kxg5 67.Ke7 Rxa7+ 68.Ke8=) 62...Kxf6 63.g4! (Now it is the only move to hold the draw.) Ke5 64.a8=Q Rxa8 65.Kxa8 Kf4 66.g5 hxg5 67.hxg5 Kxg5=.
Feb-11-07  Resignation Trap: I took a look at this game, and my first impression was that it was a King's Indian (E97) , and indeed it is very similar to some games with that line (see T Kotanjian vs E Umirgaliev, 2002 for example) after move 14. The main difference is that the light-squared Bishops are absent from the current game.
