Kibitzer's Corner
May-21-07  Eyal: Sasikiran should really be kicking himself for missing a win in this game from the penultimate round - and thereby, as it turned out, missing the win of the tournament. Black handled the opening very badly, and 15.e5! takes advantage of the fact that 14...Rfe8? denies the e8 square from the knight. However, instead of 17.Nd5, 17.Bxh5 gxh5 18.e6 f6 19.b3 should be hopeless for Black. Then Nisipeanu makes another mistake by playing 19...Bxd4? instead of gxh5, but a couple of moves later Sasikiran misses 22.Qf2! - with the same threat of Rg3+ followed by Qf6 as 22.Qh4 that was played - but allowing, after 22...Qd6, 23.Qxf7+ Kh8 24.Qxh5. Other continuations in such a case are even worse for Black - 22...h4 23.Qxh4 Qe7 24.Qh6 Kh8 25.Rdf3 and the f pawn falls; or 22...Qd8 23.d6 Rf8 24.Qg3+ Kh8 25.Qxe5+.
