Retireborn: Three questions: (1) is the position after 44.Rxd8 a theoretical win for Black? (2) surely 49...f5 cannot be the right move? (3) isn't the final position just drawn if White plays 55.Kb3?

Would welcome input from any expert on this kind of rook ending!

offramp: I can make an observation on the last question.

55.Kb3 does indeed look like a draw to me. In those days, as you know, games were 40 moves in 2½ hours and then 16 moves every hour. The first time control was move 40 and the second was at move 56. It is possible that White lost on time.

<IF> he did then I'll bet there was mutual time trouble, as I've never known Reshevsky to NOT be in time trouble if his opponent was.

Retireborn: <offramp> Thanks for that. The Informator annotator (Maric) doesn't use the time trouble symbol at all, but I suspect you are almost certainly correct.

He does attach a "Black wins" symbol to 44...Rb2+. Is it really that automatic since White can put his rook behind the a-pawn? I suppose I ought to search for comparable examples.
