Mar-18-08 | | Bobsterman3000: very entertaining.
Mar-18-08 | | chessmoron: Happy birthday and thanks for the 'wow' game! |
Mar-18-08 | | Shams: is the queen sac standard?? good grief. |
Mar-18-08 | | shr0pshire: I looked through only a few games in this line earlier and couldn't find anything, but it wasn't an exhaustive otb search and didn't include any correspondence games. And I would like to know if this is sound. It is late here and I don't want to make any assessments yet, but some from others would be greatly appreciated. Wonderful game regardless of whether it is theory or truly sound. |
Mar-18-08 | | shr0pshire: And Ivanchuk should receive two points for this game with his queen sac. Too much fun for one points worth. |
Mar-19-08 | | Kangaroo: It really was a happy birthday for Vassily Ivanchuk! |
Mar-19-08 | | kingsindian2006: this is a masterpiece by chucky.queen sac's should be in every GM's repatoire. |
Mar-19-08 | | woodenbishop: AWESOME! |
Mar-19-08 | | ughaibu: Has anyone seen a positional queen sacrifice for just three pawns? |
Mar-19-08 | | Davolni: nice sac!!! very interesting and entertaining indeed! I just don't get the 19th moves on both side...
:( |
Mar-19-08 | | andymac: <Davolni>: White's 19th move is a solid discovered check - is there a better move. Also, those who are interested may want to check out GM Joel Benjamin's video discussion of this game on www.chessclub.com/chessfm |
Mar-19-08 | | whiteshark: Did 14.♕xe6+!! caused Karjakin to fall off his chair ? |
Mar-19-08 | | percyblakeney: Karjakin had some good memories of this line, but without that queen sacrifice: S Papa vs Karjakin, 2003 |
Mar-19-08 | | percyblakeney: The queen sacrifice is a novelty according to Chesspro, and it does seem to be rather sound. Engines don't think that white's position gets any worse after looking at it briefly, and it is after all a positional queen sacrifice for just three pawns to begin with, so one can definitely talk about some compensation. |
Mar-19-08 | | BlackNightmare: really terrific game that dancing knight kept everything together the old geezer still has it. |
Mar-19-08 | | sallom89: WOW!
great game, who would think about a sac like that..so deep, amazing. |
Mar-19-08 | | whiteshark: Here is line for discussion: After <14.Qxe6+ fxe6 15.Nxe6> I would play <15...Qe7 16.Rhe1 Qxe6> giving back the ♕, with e.g. <17.Rxe6+ Ne7 18.Bxf6 gxf6 19.Bd5 Bxd5 20.Nxd5 Rd8> click for larger viewAfter <21.Nxf6+ Kf7 22.Rxd8 Rxd8 23.Rxa6 Bxf2> click for larger view material is ♙♙♙ vs ♗ and I think it's still unclear. |
Mar-19-08 | | kellmano: What an amazing game!! First - this should surely be GOTD. Second - I wonder what wll the people who say "Rapid chess is an offence to chess" would like to say about it. |
Mar-19-08 | | percyblakeney: Ivanchuk says that he had prepared the novelty very recently, between Linares and Amber, and means that Karjakin didn't find the best option when playing 18. ... Qxe1. At the end of the video one can also see Mrs. Ivanchuk: http://www.chessvibes.com/rapid-che... |
Mar-19-08 | | Jim Bartle: A question: Would a top player reveal a winning novelty during an unrated tournament? |
Mar-19-08 | | outplayer: 17...Ke7 is better. 18...Qxe1 is a blunder. 18...Bxf2 is better. |
Mar-19-08 | | Shams: <Jim Bartle><: A question: Would a top player reveal a winning novelty during an unrated tournament?> I had the exact same question. The only thing I can figure is that at the grand slam tournaments, nobody plays into white's Fischer-Sozin anymore. Still, what an absolute shocker of a game. |
Mar-19-08 | | Aspirador: <Nobody plays into white's Fischer-Sozin anymore.> What do you mean? Ivanchuk played it as white against the Najdorf. |
Mar-19-08 | | armtwister: 14.Qxe6!!!! Shower the Board with Gold coins!!! |
Mar-19-08 | | Shams: <What do you mean? Ivanchuk played it as white against the Najdorf.> if you're talking about this game, that's my point-- this is an unrated rapid/blindfold tournament. When was the last Fischer-Sozin we saw at Linares or Wijk aan Zee? |
