Stonehenge: Maybe he doesn't have to take the rook immediately?
Mar-05-09  sallom89: <Geronimo: Nd7! is a great move! Plays for complications with Grischuk under time pressure <(and +1.42 d11)> !!>

hahaha :D

Mar-05-09  Kaspykov: bishop sac on the "a" pawn doesnt win right away. but this might happen further.
Mar-05-09  ettupacman: Arkansaw, it's hard to say - is it less amazing or more in light of the fact that he does this EVERY TIME?
Mar-05-09  ajile: White's Knight is too strong to take at b8.
Mar-05-09  Frankovich: maybe 30. Rd5

tamar: The Nd7 is reminiscent of Carlsen vs Karjakin, 2009 where the knight landed on d7 also.

But that game ended in a draw when Carlsen missed a killer move that would have sealed the win.

Will he find it now?

Mar-05-09  ajile: c4-c5 is good. Get the q-side pawns rolling. Black is in big trouble.
Mar-05-09  HFBA: <Stonehenge: Maybe he doesn't have to take the rook immediately?>

After 29. ...f5 he doesn't, because white still threatens both Nxc8 and Nxf6+ followed by Nxe8, so a move like 30. c4 is possible.

Mar-05-09  AdrianP: The b6 pawn is a huge endgame asset if it can be held on to (which it looks like it can with c4 c5 etc. (it fixes b7 as a permanent liability and Bxa6 tricks are always in the air). I think it more likely that Carlsen preferred this way rather than that he 'missed' the exchange sac the first time around.
Mar-05-09  computer chess guy: < Likewise, the "mysterious numbers" are just evaluations of relative strengths and weaknesses of material, but are much less reliable for positional evaluations, weaker in the openings, ungenerous to sacrifices, etc. > Rybka's eval is quite a bit more than just material and it is fairly sophisticated in considering sacrifices, especially exchange sacs. So, you shouldn't blindly take its advice, but it's not generally bad.
Mar-05-09  achieve: I'll go out on a limb and predict the c-pawn march will prepare victory for White.
Mar-05-09  Geronimo: This time, <DEEPERGRAY> I agree with you totally. Like any tool computer evals have their use. But chess is a human game, not just a logical one. So it's so so so much more interesting fought out between humans. I like the comparison to the first decade of motor vehicles, when humans raced against them (!!!), until it became obvious that cars would be faster than humans.

But it's still nice to go out for a stroll once in a while.

Mar-05-09  narenillo: probably 30. c4 first? no need to take at once on b8 or fork on f6.
Mar-05-09  MaxxLange: When the pawn gets to c5, Bxa6 becomes a threat I think
Mar-05-09  HFBA: <AdrianP: The b6 pawn is a huge endgame asset if it can be held on to (which it looks like it can with c4 c5 etc. (it fixes b7 as a permanent liability and Bxa6 tricks are always in the air). Except that this position wasn't forced. Grischuk's 27. ...Rab8 (instead of Rec8!) was a mistake which led to the current position.

Mar-05-09  Mulyahnto: 15 sec/move for Grischuk.
Mar-05-09  ajile: I don't think Black can hold this.
Mar-05-09  SCUBA diver: The c pawn can march all the way to c6. ..
Mar-05-09  arkansaw: Eh, not everyone is here for a workout, if that's the case watching chess after work would take too much of a toll on me
Mar-05-09  Mulyahnto: Computer says Bg7 loses.

Analysis by Rybka 3 32-bit:

1. (4.22): 32.Nxb8 Rxb8[] 33.Ba6 Bf6 34.Bxb7[] Rxb7 35.c6

2. (1.27): 32.Ba6 Rbd8 33.Bxb7[] Rxd7 34.c6 Rxb7 35.c7 Bf6

Mar-05-09  narenillo: 31. c5 i think. the idea of Bishop to a6 to deflect the Black b-pawn is still in the air even after 30 ... a5
Mar-05-09  kasp: 31.Bg7 seems a mistake. 32.Nxb8 Rxb8 should be winning for white,doesnt it?
Mar-05-09  Kaspykov: Magnus doesnt have to blitz, now its might be over Bg7 is ugly

Bishop a6 might follow and win.
