 | | JointheArmy: How was this game substandard by any means? |
|
Apr-02-09 | | DoubleCheck: <<<<<<<Andrijadj>: Chessgames com,you should stop making substandard games games of the day just because of the possibility of good pun...>>>>> Agreed. I would like to see more games with sacrifices to be honest irrespective of it being a 1-0, 0-1, 1/2-1/2 result I think games involving more recognisable players
e.g. Kasparov Karpov Anand Kramnik Short etc
Helps chessgames members understand and improve thier own game rather than viewing two unknown players playing a uncommon or rarely used opening/game for the sake of a 'pun.'> |
|
Apr-02-09 | | Andrijadj: First, white opening play is horrific(8.Nd1,what the hell is that),but it succeeds only by equally horrific play of black in the middlegame... |
|
Apr-02-09 | | Xeroxx: 8.Nd1 perfectly fine.
And why only games "involving more recognisable players e.g. Kasparov Karpov Anand Kramnik Short etc"? Then we will only see games we have already seen over and over again. I claim its better to take games with less known players |

Apr-02-09 | | toadwarble: Some of these games of the day would benefit from some annotations - even a few !s and ?s would help if the object is to help us learn from them. With old games notes explaining why opening lines shown there are not usually followed today would be helpful. |

Apr-02-09 | | Dr. J: Doesn't Black get the advantage by 12... Qh4+ ( 13 Nf2 Nc6 14 Nf3 Rxf3 15 gxf3 Nxd4 ) ? |
|
Apr-02-09 | | Babar47: Nd1 is fine. It allows c3, which cements white domination in the center. The white attack on the poorly defended black king is also very very nice. I don't understand the harsh criticism....... |

 | | Peligroso Patzer: <Andrijadj: Chessgames com,you should stop making substandard games games of the day just because of the possibility of good pun...> There have been days when I have had the same feeling, but this is not one of them. This GotD may not be an all-time classic, but it's a pretty good game. White plays the attack rather nicely, including two minor-piece sacrifices. It should not matter that the players' names are unfamiliar. |
|
Apr-02-09 | | arsen387: I tend to agree with <Dr. J>. and this game of course deserves to be GOTD, thanks to CG for bringing this out |

Apr-02-09 | | Hitokiri Battousai: Good game |
|
Apr-02-09 | | Oliphaunt: 13...Qh4+ 14.g3 Qe4 15.Rg1 Ndxe5 16.dxe5 Nxe5 is clearly better for black. |
|
Apr-02-09 | | kevin86: A strange game:white castled into an open c file and in 12 moves, black made not a single attacking move on the file. Meanwhile, white forced open and used the h-file like a California freeway. |
|
Apr-02-09 | | xrt999: 26.Bf5 is a powerful move. Black cant play 26...exf5 because of 27.Qxg5, with white threatening mate a variety of different ways. Black responds with 26...Bxg6 instead, 27.Bxg6 and black resigns due to the impending 27...Kxg6 28.Qd1+ mate to follow. instead of the text 27.Bxg6, 27.Qxg5 also seems to be very forceful for white |

 | | Phony Benoni: If anything, the games of lesser players are more instructive for those trying to improve. A beginner trying to follow the arcane maneuvers of Ananparov or Topalnik is like a first grade arithmetic student trying to comprehend differential calculus. Even if it's explained to them in depth, they're not gonna get it and it ain't gonna do them any good. The main lesson in this game is that when your opponent castles into an open file, you go for the throat with all you've got. Black would have had no defensive problems on the kingside if he hadn't played so defensively. |

|
Apr-02-09 | | mworld: god, at any given point it seems black could have started checkin his way to victory. |
|
Apr-02-09 | | Sularus: we can also learn from mistakes.
there is value in learning how it should be done.
and how it should NOT be done.
just my seven cents (due to the economic crisis) |

Apr-02-09
 | | ajk68: I think Phony Benoni's comments about black's problem is right on. An incredibly passive game by black. Retreating pieces to "defensive" positions where they can't do anything (even defend!). |
|
Apr-02-09 | | chillowack: To the guy who said, "Nd1, what the hell was that," the answer is *prophylaxis* (problem-preventing). Black's standard maneuver in such positions is ...c5, so White was preparing the best counter, c2-c3. Also, the knight is headed for the kingside to join the attack. To the people who complained that this game didn't feature enough sacrifices: did you catch White's double piece sacrifice? Sure, the second one was a sham sac, but there were fireworks here. Finally: to the people saying "all Black had to do was play ...Rc8+ and victory would have been simple": I'm afraid I don't see that. One check does not a winning attack make. White's attack came marching up the kingside, it wasn't just a case of Black "needlessly defending" and getting into trouble. White's attack was skillfully played. This game makes a worthy GOTD. |

 | | Peligroso Patzer: <beautifulwretch: What happens after 26....Rxf6?> In that line, 27. Qh2 would seem to create unstoppable threats down the h-file. |
