Sep-16-13 | | kevin86: Warning-smother hazard-
For black's king of course. Mate in three! |
Sep-16-13 | | varishnakov: What a crazy game.
And nice mate, easy. |
Sep-16-13
 | | scutigera: I've seen Philidor's Legacy before, and I've seen a few epaulette mates, but this is the first time I've seen both at once. |
Sep-16-13 | | SuperPatzer77: <TheaN : ...White smothers with <27.Nf6+ Kf8 (Kd8 Qd7#) 28.Qd8+ Rxd8 29.Nd7# 1-0>. Pretty straightforward but pleasing sight. > <TheaN> You made a typo - 28. Qd8+ Rxd8 - it should be 28. Qe8+ Rxe8, 29. Nd7# SuperPatzer77 |
Sep-16-13 | | Nullifidian: A smothered mate with:
27. ♘f6+ ♔f8 (♔d8 28. ♕d7#) 28. ♕e8+ ♖xe8 29. ♘d7# |
Sep-16-13 | | thegoodanarchist: I love a good smothered mate! Always on the lookout for it. It is even cooler than an epaulet mate imo. |
Sep-16-13 | | James D Flynn: White is piece up but Black has threats along the open g file e.g. 27…..Qg1+ 28.Ke2 f3+ 29.Kxf3 Q g4+ 30.Ke3 Bg5+ 31.Kd3 Qxf5+ 32.Kd4(or Ke2 Qxc2+) Rc4+) however White has a decisive double check 27.Nf6+ Kf8(not Kd8 28.Qd7#) 28.Qe8+ Rxe8 28.Nd7#. |
Sep-16-13 | | SamAtoms1980: 27.Nf6+ Kf8 28.Qe8+ Rxe8 29.Nd7#.
Didn't get to it until now. The motif, the theme may be very familiar but this particular incarnation is gorgeous. |

 | | gawain: Unusually interesting for an early-week puzzle. |
Mar-19-23 | | Brenin: An excellent choice of GOTD and title for Mothering Sunday. |

 | | An Englishman: Good Evening: Astonishing how poisonous the Exchange Slav can become, and by the most subtle means. After only ten moves, White has the Queen and a Rook in play, and begun the attack. Nice to see a smothered mate someplace other than in one of the corners. Any smothered mates where the King is surrounded by *8* of his pieces? |
Mar-19-23 | | areknames: Great pun and fun game! My old acquaintance Astengo cops a real hiding here, however what's truly unbelievable to me is that he managed to draw against Ulf Andersson in the very same tournament. |

 | | Teyss: - Hi Mom, happy Mother's Day.
- Now where did you get that idea?
- I got reminded on a site...
- Oh dear, a British site for sure. You apparently don't know there are 38 different dates for Mother's Day across the globe. You should exercice outside instead of being on internet. But wear a scarf, it's nippy. Did you eat your broccoli today?
- Mom, it's morning...
- A good broccoli smoothie to start the day as usual dear. Must rush now, have a Nordic walk before my pilates. Don't forget to call back on the right date. |

 | | MissScarlett: I won't claim that Brits invented motherhood, but they were surely the first to realise its potential for commercial exploitation (I use the term in a non-pejorative sense). |
Mar-19-23
 | | FSR: Picturesque mate. |
Mar-19-23
 | | OhioChessFan: <Teyss: Oh dear, a British site for sure. You apparently don't know there are 38 different dates for Mother's Day across the globe.> I was quite confused, but okay. We just can't get enough puns on Sundays that only the Brits among us understand. The same submitter has accused me of obscure puns, alas. |
Mar-19-23
 | | HeMateMe: Best puns work under the KISS principle. |
Mar-19-23 | | Brenin: Sorry to be pedantic, but Mothering Sunday originally celebrated (and still does) the mother church, that is, the church in which one was baptised and thus became a child of the Church. Mother's Day is a secular modern commercial celebration of mothers and motherhood, characterized by massive exchanges of flowers, cards and phone calls. Pi(e), apple or otherwise, was celebrated a few days ago, on 3/14 as you Yanks call it. |
Mar-19-23
 | | Teyss: <Brenin> Don't apologise, it's not pedantic, it's informative as usual. I couldn't resist making fun of Missy but the pun is funny and the game interesting. 27.? was a Monday puzzle in 2013. As noted above 23.? would be a much more complex puzzle because of the variations following 23...Rc6. |

Mar-21-23
 | | An Englishman: Good Evening: Thanks, <MissScarlet>. completely forgot about that game. |
