Penguincw: How much is 100 francs anyways?
Mar-12-11  krippp: A link from the 1st resulting page from a google-search of "franc historical value" gives the historical values of:

1 franc in 1860 as 1,99 € in 2006, and
1 franc in 1900 as 2,37 € in 2006.

This means an increase in value of 0.38 euros in 40 years. If we assume linear growth for the franc's value during this time, it follows that 1 franc in 1870 was worth: 1,99 € + 10/40 * 0.38 € = 2.085 €

Thus, 100 francs in 1870 would be equivalent to 100 * 2.085 €

= 208,5 euros in 2006.

Not a very massive amount, then: a stake of about 70 euros per player. More like a friendly sporting bet.

  Penguincw: < krippp > Thanks.
Jul-11-12  e4 resigns: You don't see Bb2 much anymore
Jan-06-13  thomastonk: <100 francs> Maybe it is interesting to relate the stakes of this game to the prizes of the main tournament: 3000 francs for Anderssen (1st place), 600 francs for Steinitz (2nd place) and 200 francs for Blackburne and Neumann (each, shared 3rd place).
Jul-30-15  zanzibar: <Westminster Chess Club Papers v3 (Aug 1870) p49> mentions this game, but not the stakes.

It was played Saturday, July 16, and was billed as Germany vs. England.

It started at 10am, and hourly usage was as follows (move given):

White: 27, 35, 47, 61

Black: 17, 31, 46, 62

The tournament games were run with a time limit of 20 moves/hour.

Baden was an independent duchy during the tournament - I assume though, that the prize money was offered in French Francs. Is that correct?

Jul-23-21  Stolzenberg: <Penguincw, krippp, thomastonk: 100 francs> and <zanzibar: ..., that the prize money was offered in French Francs. Is that correct?> No it is not. Baden was an independent duchy until 1871 and the currency it used until Dec. 31st, 1875 was the florin (in German this means Gulden, abbreviated fl. or f.).
Jul-23-21  Z truth 000000101: <Stolzenberg> much obliged from Z-team land.

(Just wondering then, did they mint their own coinage? Have to google search this...)

A picture of a 1 Gulden coin from 1870.

Rereading the above notation, the 100F wager was between the players, or so it seems. This could mean they were using a non-local currency, I suppose.

Ah, there's never enough time in the day!

Jul-24-21  Stolzenberg: <Position after 16. ... Qd8>: As 17. Qc3 invited the knight to jump to f4 and after 17. Nd4 = Anderssen vs Steinitz, 1866 the knight jumped to e5, it seems, that White should hesitate to move these pieces. Instead 17. Ba3 should at least be taken into consideration.
