Jul-01-15  erimiro1: 29.N:f6+ does it - 29.-R:f6 30.N d5 etc. or 30.Qh4 Kf7 31.Bd5+ Be6 32.Qh7+
Jul-01-15  patzer2: My pick was 29. Bxf6 for today's Wednesday puzzle. It wins, but isn't as clearly decisive as 29. Nxf6+! .

Deep Fritz 14 assesses 29. Nxf6+ (+15.75 @ 22 depth) as considerably stronger than 29. Bxf6 (+3.79 2 22 depth).

P.S. The losing move appears to be the piece sacrifice <20...Nxd4?> Instead, 20...Nd6 21. Nb4 holds on with drawing chances.

Jul-01-15  M.Hassan: "Medium/Easy"
White to play 29.?
White has 2 Knights for a Rook

29.Nxf6+ Rxf6
Now the Rook has became pinned.
30.Nd5
and the rook will also be captured.

Jul-01-15  agb2002: White has two knights for a rook.

Black threatens 29... fxg5.

The white pieces are ready to attack the black king and queen starting with 29.Nxf6+:

A) 29... Rxf6 30.Nd5 and White ends up a knight ahead at least.

B) 29... Kf7 30.Bd5+

B.1) 30... Be6 31.Ng4+ wins the queen.

B.2) 30... Re6 31.Rxe6+ Kxe6 (31... Bxe6 is even worse than B.1) 32.Qc4+ wins the queen in two moves.

B.3) 30... Ke7(f8,g7) 31.Ng4(h7,h5)+, respectively, wins the queen.

C) 29... Kf8 30.Nh7+ wins the queen.

D) 29... Kg7 30.Nh5+ wins the queen.

E) 29... Kh8 30.Qh4+ Kg7 31.Qh7+ Kf8 32.Bh6#.

Jul-01-15  stst: Strange arrangement, allowing no immediate kill, but both Black's R & Q will be off:

29.Nxf6+ Kf7 (other flight sq. allows N+ to let go the Q) 30.Bxc6 bxc6
31.Qc4+ Kg7 (similar reason, but no escape this time) 32.Nh5+ gxh5
33.Bxd6 ...

With both R & Q off, Black will also be off soon...

See if this is what the actual game ensues??

Jul-01-15  stst: pretty much! Black's RxN does not really help the next White N stepping in...
Jul-01-15  Shoukhath007: nice puzzle,do you know the rules of castling then solve this amazing tim krabbe's designed funny puzzle.Aim is mate in only 3 moves. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=mcmtC...
Jul-01-15  gofer: White is currently a piece up, but looks to be losing one of them, but looks can be decieving...

<29 Nxf6+ ...>

All king moves lead to disaster...

29 ... Kf8
30 Nh7+

29 ... Kg7
30 Nh5+ or

29 ... Kh7/Kh8
30 Qh4+ mating

29 ... Kf7
30 Bd5+ ...

30 ... Re6
31 Bxe6+ Kxe6
32 Qe3+

30 ... Be6
31 Bxe6+ Kxe6
32 Qe3+

<29 ... Rxf6>
<30 Nd5+ >

~~~
Yep, but not that "satisfying"...
Jul-01-15  morfishine: <29.Nxf6+> does the trick since 29...Rxf6 30.Nd5 loses on the spot
*****
Jul-01-15  CHESSTTCAMPS: White has two knights for a rook and the black king is much more exposed. Black threatens 29... fxg5. White can proceed naturally with
29.Nxf6+ setting up a devastating pin or battery to win additional material and build a mating net.
A) 29... Rxf6 30.Nd5 Qxa5 31.Nxf6+ Kg7 32.Qb8 with no real defense to the dual threats of 33.Qg8# and 34.Qxb7+ forcing mate soon.
A.1) 30... Bxa5 31.Nxf6+ Kf7 (Kh8 32.Qh4+ Kg7 33.Qh7+ Kf8 34.Bh6#) 32.Bd5+ Be6 (otherwise N+ wins Q) 33.Ne4+ wins queen.
A.2) 30... R moves 31.Bxd8 wins
A.3) 30... other 31.Nxf6 with an extra piece and a winning attack.
B) 29... Kh8 30.Qh4+ forces mate similarly to A.1 parenthesized note
C) 29... Kg7 30.Nh5+ wins Q
D) 29... Kf8 30.Nh7+ wins Q
E) 29... Kf7 30.Bd5+ Re6 (other 31.N+ wins queen) 31.Bxe6+ Kxe6 (other 32.N+ wins queen) 32.Qe3+ wins Be1 with a 3 piece advantage.
Time for review ...
Jul-01-15  zb2cr: Got this one.
Jul-01-15  Cheapo by the Dozen: Pretty underwhelming.
Only issue was checking that Black didn't have enough counterplay on the back rank to matter, but in fact White can always interpose with the queen at f1.
In one line he can play Bxc6, then retreat the bishop to g2 in time for Qf1. That's the closest thing I found in this puzzle to a tactical flourish.
Jul-01-15  whiteshark: We haven't pinned our hopes on him.
Jul-01-15  dfcx: White is already ahead with two knights against a rook.
29.Nxf6+ wins
A) King moves. If Kg7 or Kf8, knight check wins the queen. If Kh8?? 30.Qh4+ mates. That leaves 29...Kf7 30.Bd5+ and the King still has to go to g7 or f8, losing the queen.
B) 29...Rxf6 The rook is pinned. 30.Nd5 wins the rook back. White will be a whole piece plus a pawn ahead.
  Penguincw: The variation I went for was 29.Nxf6+ Rxf6 30.Bxf6 Qxf6 31.Qb8+ Kg7 32.Qxb7, and white has a knight and 2 pawns vs. bishop.
It still wins, but it's much longer, and I'd probably lose it OTB.
Jul-01-15  kevin86: What's the big deal? White is already material and he gets more...so what?
