Phony Benoni: This is the initial link in the Saavedra chain. See http://asp.internet.is/srt/fentonpo...
Mar-09-11  gauer: Okay, so being a library cataloger by profession, are you able to peek at the rare book source discussed at J L Fernandez Saavedra vs R D Da Silva, 2001 - & once the score gets corrected, it might fit into your "Instructive Positions from Master Chess" well.

How often does the theme occur in practice? More often than one suspects, since Beliavsky vs Kotronias, 2009 & Svidler vs Topalov, 2006 , both scoring 1-0, are trusty tools to have armed in one's utility belt of ♖ v ♙ endings.

Sep-29-14  john barleycorn: <Phoni Benoni> I add this as your link does not work anymore:

Löwenfisch and Smyslov in their book on rook endgames wrote that this game was the origin for Saavedra's position. 1895 Barbier gave this position as "Black to move and draw". Saavedra's contribution from 1902 lies in the underpromotion of the c-pawn into a rook and make it a "White to move and win" study.

Here is a related problem by Horwitz given in the book by Löwenfisch and Smyslov:

MissScarlett: <When the well known London player Potter died in March of that year, chess editor G.E. Barbier wrote an obituary. A few weeks later, on 27 April, he published a position from one of Potter's games - remembering it wrongly, as Selman demonstrated. But precisely that was the first step to the masterpiece.>

I think I made my own small discovery - Barbier didn't misremember the incorrect Fenton-Potter position; he likely copied it from the chess column published in the <Newcastle Courant> on Saturday, March 9th 1895 (four days before Potter's death), where in similar fashion to Barbier, the finish to the game is recounted, down to the crowd of spectators and Potter's offer to demonstrate the missed win.

The author of the <Courant> column is uncredited but it's probably H W Hawks. The column appears to have been an important one at the time, so it's not unlikely that Barbier in Glasgow would've been familiar with it.

MissScarlett: I just realised that the game result (1-0) is wrong. Correction submitted.
