Kibitzer's Corner
Jul-19-12  master of defence: Maybe 57...Bg4 is little better cause keeps fighting to the win.
Jul-19-12  Eyal: Caruana missed forced wins on moves 28 & 29. On move 28, Qb5! takes advantage of the awkward positioning of Black's pieces, threatening Nb4, against which Black doesn't have a good defense - the best he can do is to give up the exchange for a pawn with 28...Rxc2 29.Nb4 Rxa2. (Moving the bishop away from b6 drops either Na5 or the d4 pawn, with disastrous consequences after Nxd4.)

However, 28.Ng5 was difficult to meet as well - it creates the strong threat of 29.Nxe6! when 29...Rxe6 loses to 30.Qxb6. 28...Kh8 or 28...Bc8 lose to 29.Nb4! (e.g. 28...Bc8 29.Nb4 Rc7 30.Nd5! or 29...Rc5 30.Na6! Rc6 31.Nb8). And 28...Bd8 as played by Meier should have lost to 29.Bxe6+! Rxe6 30.Qa2 Bc8 31.Nc5! Qxc5 32.Nxe6 Bxe6 33.Qxe6+ Kf8 34.Qxf5+ Kg8 (34...Ke8 35.Qxh7) 35.Qd7! Be7 (35...Qe7 36.Qxd4) 36.f5! to be followed by f6 (36...Qxe5 37.Qe8+ Bf8 38.Qxe5).

So why is 28.Ng5 less good objectively than Qb5? Because Black can hold with 28...h6!!; the point being that after 29.Nxe6 Kh7/h8! the knight on e6 is trapped and will be captured by the rook on the next move, while 29.Nb4 is met by 29...Rc4! 30.Bxc4 Rxc4 31.Nf3 Bxf3 32.Rxf3 Nd2, regaining the exchange.

Jul-19-12  master of defence: <Eyal> Do you have a program for your analysis?
Jul-19-12  Eyal: You mean if I'm using an engine? Yes - I wouldn't have figured out the whole idea with 28...h6 by myself...
Jul-19-12  master of defence: <Eyal> Ok. But I donĀ“t have a engine for analyse the games.
