Oct-22-17 | | Cheapo by the Dozen: First Sunday puzzle I've gotten in a long time. The first move is obvious; it has to be played immediately before the Black f pawn can be advanced. The second move is obviously forcing. Then it's just a question of noting that Qf5 defends the knight long enough in ... Kh8 lines, and that the mating net actually holds in lines like the actual game. |

Oct-22-17 | | diagonalley: very pretty... but hardly 'insane' |

Oct-22-17 | | mel gibson: The computer agrees with only the first few moves and black puts up a better fight. So it's not a checkmate as in this game. 17. Nf6+ (17. Nf6+ (♘g4-f6+ g7xf6 ♘g3-h5

Oct-22-17 | | patzer2: <Cheapo by the Dozen: First Sunday puzzle I've gotten in a long time.> More often than not, I fail to solve the Sunday puzzle. I was able to solve this one (17. ?), but it was not easy. I had to eliminate a lot of tempting alternatives to come up with the solution, and play the first few moves hoping I was on the right track. Finding 17. Nf6+! gxf6 18. Nh5 Qe7 19. Nxf6+ Kg7 was the initial solution I settled upon. However, I was flying by the seat of my pants and was fortunate to see 20. Bh6+! was available to finish off the combination with a clever mate. Initially I was puzzled about how to respond to 20...Kh8, but then I saw 20...Kh8 21. Qf5 +- wins easy. |
|
Oct-22-17 | | patzer2: Black's decisive mistake was 16...Qd7?, inviting the decisive 17. Nf6+ +-. Instead, 16...f6 = to ⩲ (+0.29 @ 25 depth) keeps Black in the game according to our Stockfish engine analysis feature. |

Oct-22-17 | | Walter Glattke: 18.-Qd8 19.Nf6+ Kh8 20.Qf5 Qxf6 White win |
|
Oct-22-17 | | AlicesKnight: Saw the break-in. Nothing 'pianissimo' about this neat attack. |
|
Oct-22-17 | | newzild: I found this to be very easy for a Sunday, but I varied on move 19. Instead of 19. Nxf6+, I thought that it was stronger to play 19. Qf5 first. Can anybody explain why this might be inferior?
If 19. Qf5 works then I am 7/7 for the week. |
|
Oct-22-17 | | newzild: ...also, White's mate commencing 20. Bh6+! only works because Black played 18. Qe7 instead of 18. Qd8, which would have provided a flight square after 20. Bh6+ Kxh6 21. Qh5+ Kg7 22. Qxh7+ Kxf6. |
|
Oct-22-17 | | patzer2: <newzild> Your 19. Qf5 with the threat of 20. Nxf6+ Kh8 21. Qxh7# obviously works, and if earlier 18...Qd8 then 18...Qd8 19. Qf5 +- is the clear winning continuation. Congratulations on going 7 for 7 for the week. |

Oct-22-17 | | morfishine: It helps I've seen this one, even if I don't remember where lol ***** |
|
Oct-22-17 | | agb2002: The material is identical.
Black would probably consider f6.
White can start an attack against the black king with 17.Nf6+ gxf6 18.Nh5: A) 18... Qe7 19.Nxf6+ Kg7 (19... Kh8 20.Qf5 wins decisive material) 20.Bh6+ Kxh6 (20... Kh8 21.Qf5 and mate soon) 21.Qh5+ Kg7 22.Qxh7+ Kxf6 23.Qh6#. B) 18... Qd8 19.Bh6
B.1) 19... Re8 20.Nxf6+ Kh8 21.Qf5 Nf8 22.Bxf8 wins. B.2) 19... f5 20.Qg3+ Kg8 21.Bg7+ Kg8 22.Bh6+ and mate next. B.3) 19... Kh8 20.Rd1 (20.Nxf6 Ncd4 21.cxd4 Nxd4; 20.Qf5 Rg8 21.Nxf6 Rg6) B.3.a) 20... Qe7 21.Nxf6 with the double threat Rd7 and Qf5 looks winning for White. B.3.b) 20... Ncd4 21.cxd4 Nxd4 22.Rxd4 Bxd4 (22... Qxd4 23.Qxf6+ Kg8 24.Qg7#) 23.Bg7+ Kg8 24.Bxf6 wins. |

Oct-22-17 | | Marmot PFL: Would have played 17 Bh6 although I don't see any win there. Looked at 17 Nf6+ too but missed the mate, didn't see more than perpetual check. |

 | | AylerKupp: <<newzild> Instead of 19. Nxf6+, I thought that it was stronger to play 19. Qf5 first. Can anybody explain why this might be inferior?> I'll let Houdini 4, Komodo 11.01, and Stockfish 8 try. From the following position after 19.Qf5:

So, once again, congratulations on going 7/7 for the week! I do think it's interesting to see how each engine tried different approaches for Black to defend. |
|
Oct-22-17 | | BOSTER: <newzild>19.Qf5
When picking candidates moves start with check. So Nxf6+ is preferable.
After 19.Qf5 black can play Ncd4 with threat Nxf5 and Nc2 winning the rook.So white'd play 20.Nxf6 Qxf6 21.Qxf6, and with only one queen in the black camp it is not easy to attack. |
