Aug-05-15 | | Nick46: More medium than easy methinks. |
Aug-05-15 | | cocker: In the final position White is (presumably) about to play 34 Qb7+ with a quick kill. |
Aug-05-15 | | fokers13: only reason i got this is you can easily see the idea of trapping the queen and nothing else works, but i doubt i'd have played it otb flashy though it may be. |
Aug-05-15 | | dfcx: white can trap the queen and threaten a fork in one move. 29.Rf5!
A. 29...fxg5 30.f3 gxf5 31.fxg4 fxg4 32.hxg5
B. 29...gxf5 30.f3 fxg5 - same as above
C. 29...Qxd1? 30.Ne6+ Kg8 (Kf7?? 31.Nxd8+) 31.Qxd1 gets a queen for rook |
Aug-05-15 | | saturn2: @dfxc C. 29...Qxd1? 30.Ne6+ Kg8 (Kf7?? 31.Nxd8+) 31.Qxd1 gets a queen for rook I think after 31...Re8 black also wins the Knight or the rook in addition.
So all in all 29..Qxd1 is not worse than 29..gxRf5 |
Aug-05-15 | | dfcx: @saturn2 <I think after 31...Re8 black also wins the Knight or the rook in addition. So all in all 29..Qxd1 is not worse than 29..gxRf5> After 31...Re8 32.Rxf6 wins |
Aug-05-15 | | VanPoolPlayer: <lost in space> Even though the material is even, I think the more nimble Queen is better than 2 rooks in this position. |
Aug-05-15 | | lost in space: <<VanPoolPlayer:> <lost in space> Even though the material is even, I think the more nimble Queen is better than 2 rooks in this position.> Agreed. But I was not able to see it at the sarting position of the puzzle. Now, after having analyzed the psoition at the end of the combination I am able to see that too, especially when having seen 32. Qe3. |
Aug-05-15 | | thegoodanarchist: <beenthere240: You have to love 29. Rf5. It's a good candidate for a tuesday puzzle IMO. I hope Judit is smiling -- 6.5 isn't too shabby.> Very close! Turned out to be a Wednesday puzzle :) |
Aug-05-15 | | saturn2: @dfcx, you are right Rxf6 I did not consider |
Aug-05-15 | | kevin86: I saw the solution of the rook locking in the queen and the pawn capturing her. The endgame looks like some work ahead, however. |
Aug-05-15 | | YouRang: After a few seconds of looking for a tactic against the black king, it dawned on me that the striking characteristic of the position is the precariously placed black queen, whose only escape is through the g4-f5 diagonal. Then it was quickly evident that this is a queen trap: 29.Rf5!, which (1) plugs the only escape, and (2) enables 30.f3 -- attacking on the now-trapped queen. |
Aug-05-15 | | whiteshark: <29.Rf5> traps ♕ (w/30.f3) and wins game. |

 | | dorsnikov: Medium, easy ?? I'd call it more "moderate difficult." It goes to show "Dynamic Vision' is the key to good chess. |
Aug-05-15 | | Cheapo by the Dozen: If White had nothing better than 32 hg this would still have been a line achieving significant advantage. Frankly, that's as far as I calculated. :) |
Aug-05-15 | | BOSTER: < dorsnikov: "Dynamic Vision">.
I'd like to know how you explain <Dynamic Vision > in chess. Thanks. |
Aug-05-15 | | BOSTER: < beenthere240: 6,5 isn't too shabby>.
There is no reason to see Polgar's smile. |
Aug-05-15 | | thegoodanarchist: <kevin86: ... The endgame looks like some work ahead, however.> After 34.Qb7+ I don't think White has much to work out. |
Aug-05-15 | | Halldor: I saw this rather quickly since I started by trying to find a way to trap the black Queen which is awkwardly positioned. Sacrificing the Rook is the only way to do that. |
Aug-05-15 | | swordfish: I actually got this one, but don't quite understand why Black resigned when he did. Polgar has a Q for a rook, piece and pawn, which doesn't look like a decisive advantage. |
Aug-05-15 | | CHESSTTCAMPS: Material is even, with both sides having similar piece activity and king safety. Black's queen is more active, but is close to being trapped. White's attacked knight can retreat to h3, but it makes more sense to complete the queen trap: 29.Rf5! takes away the queen's diagonal retreat and prepares f3. Whether black takes the knight or the rook first, the queen is still trapped: A) 29... fxg5 30.f3 gxf5 (Qxg3+ 31.Qxg3 immediately activates the white queen) 31.fxg4 hxg4 (fxg4 32.Qd3! and the threat of Qg5+ is winning) 32.exf5 Kf6 (Nc4 33.b3 Nb6 34.Qd3) 33.Qd3 gxh4 34.gxh4 and the queen will invade on g5 or h6. B) 29... gxf5 30.f3 (Ne6+ Kg8 31.Nxd8 Rc8 32.Rxd6 Nc4 is unclear to me) fxg5 31.fxg4 transposes to A) Time for review.... |
Aug-05-15 | | CHESSTTCAMPS: I meant 33.Qe3 instead of Qd3 in all cases and failed to analyze 30.Qxf5. |
Aug-06-15 | | RookedFileFan: Does 34.Qb7+ finish black? |
Aug-06-15 | | Eusebius: After 34.Qb7+ black is busted because the knight goes. 34...Nd7 35.Rxd6 |
Aug-06-15 | | kevin86: Black blundered...now she will lose a knight after the queen fork. |
