Phony Benoni: The pun relates to Memorial Day in the United States. In light of the sacrificial play from both sides it is perhaps appropriate, but not something to dwell on.

Having come so far, White might as well as tried 36.Nxc6 hoping for 36...Qc5? 37.d7! But 36...e2 would kibosh such ideas in a hurry.

  al wazir: 27...Bxe4 would have been a quicker way to win: 28. g3 (28. Nxe4 Nf3+) Nf3+ 29. Nxf3 Qxf3 30. Qxe4 Qxe4 31. Bxf8 Qd4+.
May-26-14  NeoIndian: It looks to me as if 19.a4 was too risky (all black pieces are ideally placed for an attack, and white pieces are somewhat uncoordinated). Strangely, Engines seem to like it...what is White trying to do here? I thought maybe something like 19.Qd1 f5 20.Ng5 Bxg5 21.hxg5 Qxg5 22.Bxd4(this Knight is just too strong) cxd4 23.Nf3 Qf6 and slowly trying to untangle himself is the way to go.
May-26-14  goodevans: 20...f5!

I guess you need to be pretty confident your attack's going to succeed before you set out to sac both a ♖ and a ♗.

eternaloptimist: This is a great game by bruzon (one of my favorite players)! He made some nice calculations & had good intuition as well! I noticed he waited until oratovsky didn't have any pieces on his ♔side & then he attacked. This occurred after 17.♘fd2. 20...♙f5! was indeed a good move as pointed out by <goodevans>. It chased away the ♘, opened up the d8->h4 diagonal & led to some sacrifices which led to the victory for bruzon! Oratovsky didn't have a plan & he paid the price for it (shifting his DS♗ back & forth between a3 & b2 reveals that to me). Also what was up w/ 6.♙h4 ? I know he was hoping to push it forward & hopefully open up the h-file but that never materialized...yet another win by the ingenious Cuban bruzon!

eternaloptimist: The 21...♗xh4!! 22...♗xf2!! combo is truly amazing & noteworthy! Bruzon completely ignored oratovsky's threat against his c♙ & blasted oratovsky's ♔side wide open. 21...♗xh4!! is much better than a passive move like 21...♕a5 guarding his c♙. Back in '01 & '02 bruzon was in the top 10 in the world. After u play over this game, it's easy to see why!
May-27-14  kevin86: Black will have two queens, white has two minor pieces. Three guesses on who wins- first two don't count.

eternaloptimist: <kevin86> lol...I'll pick bruzon to win this game all day also! Oratovsky had the same opinion as us & that's why he resigned.
