Fusilli: I find that this setup for white in the QGD is both solid and dangerous. It's hard to create good counterplay with the black pieces. Sjugirov conducted the game in great style.
Dec-03-14  Nerwal: A very impressive handling of this variation. However, it is probably a well-cooked home preparation improving on an old Yusupov game : Timman vs Yusupov, 1995 (and the computer gives 21. d5 as best with a large plus score and all Sjugirov's subsequent moves).

Fusilli: <Nerwal> Oh wow... naive of Yusupov to get into it, no? Unless he forgot about his game with Timman and was just playing what he thought was best, just as he did nearly 20 years ago...
Dec-03-14  Nerwal: Yusupov must have played something like 3000 serious games, most of them prior the computer era, I am not sure he is spending all his working days checking them with the newest software available now that he's more into teaching and writing about chess...
Dec-03-14  paavoh: I agree completely <Fusilli>, thanks for lifting this game up. I have long been a fan of Yusupov and Dreev, solid players of the old school, and whose styles I'd like to emulate.
