Mar-27-15  hemy: Moldavia - Lithuania match in last round of tournament.
Jul-05-17  Mudphudder: Very nice win. What strength are you?

Mr. Figler eventually reached International Master status but I think he only reached this around the 2000's. So I was curious what level he was playing at back in the 1960's.

The line you give for white as drawing is lost. You don't need a board to see that- after 65. Kb6 black plays 65 ... Kd6, and now white's only move to try to effect pawn promotion and draw, 66. Ka7, is met by 66 ... Kc7 and black is in time to control the queening square and so win.

Sometimes R vs K+P can be tricky, but this one isn't. White is lost after 59. a4 b:a4+ 60 K:a4 because white can't shoulder the black king away from reaching the critical square c7.

You're right. I don't know how I missed that. Thanks.

Sep-19-21  Muttley101: <al wazir> You're welcome, thank you also, because your post prompted me to look a bit more at the endgame. It is still won if black plays 60 ...Kg2, but there is a lot more content to that winning line because white can now block the black king by playing b5 and Kb4. The winning technique relies on a cute detail, so again, thanks :D

As I said, R vs K+P can be tricky (and are something I've been studying recently). the learning point for not missing ... Kc7 is to know that black's winning technique may involve controlling one of the pawn's squares towards promotion with both king and rook, so its onward march is finally stopped. Controlling b8 is the final chance to achieve that, so ... Kc7 is the crucial move (square) for black.

Hopefully thinking about it like this might mean you won't miss it in future. Good luck.

Sep-19-21  mrknightly: <Messiah> Agree. Better may have been "A Kasimov(a) Conquest."
Sep-20-21  Brit: Who would have thought, after five years, my pun made it to GOTD. Good thing I happened to log on today.
