Jun-18-15  TITIKIZA: Topalov jumps to third on live chess ratings

Penguincw: Well, that was a quick one, as Topalov is now 2/2 with black in this tournament.

Anyway, 22.Nd5 seemed to be the fatal move for MVL, as it allowed black to have a passed pawn.

After 29.Rf3 Rxd6, I'm not going to say MVL should resign, but it's definitely a long road ahead, as black is up a (passed) pawn, and has all the piece activity. Black's king is completely safe, so no counterplay on the queenside.

Jun-18-15  Makavelli II: I didn't see that one coming. To the untrained eye this position doesn't look so bad, but to a player of my strengths (I'm modest by saying I'm about 2300!!!) i see a Topalov win. These Grand mistresses aren't as good as they think they are.
Jun-18-15  Severin: Topalov seems to have a lock on the "luckiest player of the tournament" award. His live rating is no joke, but I'm not sure he can maintain it.

plang: What was "lucky" about todays game?
Jun-18-15  JohnBoy: <Makavelli> - there is neither an "Adam Jones" nor an "A Jones" with a half-way decent rating at the USCF. You may be modest saying you're about 2300, but it seems like you're more full of horse output.
Jun-18-15  Severin: <plang> His opponent is in very poor form. If MVL was at the top of his game, this wouldn't have been such a quick win. He would have had to fight more for it, at least. But now Topa's well rested and tied for first.

His play was very impressive, as always, but MVL wasn't playing like himself at all.

Jun-18-15  shintaro go: Something is defintely wrong with MVL at the moment

plang: MVL is playing sharp, theoretical openings. He got a win in the first round using this approach; here he was outplayed. Nothing to do with luck.
Jun-18-15  Mating Net: I really like counter intuitive 14...Nf8 by Topalov. The Knight is awkwardly placed, but only for a few moves. In the meantime, the Knight defends e6, enables 0-0-0, and Black has no problems.

Um, horse meat?

Jun-18-15  Atking: <plang: MVL is playing sharp, theoretical openings. He got a win in the first round using this approach; here he was outplayed. Nothing to do with luck.> Sure but that's clearly not the same Maxime who won vs Caruana at Tata steel. He needs some break. I heard he have no coach actually. Is that true? It seems suicidal at that level especially in computers chess generation.
Jun-05-17  ChessHigherCat: If 23. Qxd5 Ba5 (took me a while to see that, although I would be modest in calling myself a "2600 player")
Jun-05-17  ChessHigherCat: f 29. Nf4 e7 and ouch. If 29. Rg1 Ng4 30. Rf1 Nf2+ 31. Rxf2 exf2 and ouch. If 29. Qc7+ Qxc7 30. dxc7 Kxc7 and black still has the threat of Ng4 plus Rd2, which is bad enough to resign according to MVL and I'll take his word for it.

Ce n'est pas là grave, it's just one game and anybody can lose to topple off. I suggest that anybody who starts wailing about blunders suggest what he should have played instead.

Jun-05-17  The Kings Domain: Bad loss by the most brilliant player of his time.

The pun's one of the best, I couldn't help chuckling to it. :-)

Jun-06-17  kevin86: Black wins quickly!
