Dec-30-15  thomastonk: Not a very spectacular game, but it had a moment of theoretical interest. Thomas deviated from Chigorin vs Steinitz, 1892 by 10.. ♕f6. Did he know that he followed Fedden v Withers, Bristol 1863? This game ended peacefully after 11.♗b5 ♕xf3 12.♗xc6+ ♔f8? 13.♕xa5?. Thomas's 11.. ♘ge7 is no improvement. Lasker could have played 12.♕xa5; he would have been a piece up then, but it is not winning. Black could castle (both sides seem to be possible) and win the pawn on d4 with some compensation.

Lasker's 12.d5? spoiled the game.

I have a problem with the date of the game: 1896.04.14. I have three sources that suggest that the game was played on April 17 or April 18.

And do get games from simuls round numbers?

<<Herr Lasker's simultaneous performance at the Criterion last night proved a great attraction. Twenty-eight took boards against the master, and play proceeded somewhat deliberately until 11 30 p.m. Some unfinished games were then adjudicated, and the final result was that Lasker won 20, drew 6, and lost 2. One of the wins was a creditable one by a lad of 14, a son of Sir George Thomas. Lady Thomas and several other members of the Ladies' Club took part.> The Times, April 18, 1896, p.9>

Jan-06-17  Retireborn: <MissS> This came up on the ECF forum a while back and it was pointed out that Ken Whyld used 17 April (a Friday) in his book and various posters added more newspaper links confirming that.

In that thread I mentioned that Thomas and Lasker didn't play each other again until Nottingham 1936 and asked if there were other instances of well-known players meeting again after 40 years; I repeat that question here!

I believe the round number in a simul generally denotes the table number.

So I suppose it's the turn round the course number.
