Kibitzer's Corner
Dec-24-17  leRevenant: too hard for me
Dec-24-17  Everett: Got the gist. Likely would have played up until 27.Txdy and cursed as I dropped my c4 Bishop. So, did see the continuation up to that point, yet did not see me still down a piece and did not evaluate the rest as a win.

No points

Dec-24-17  Mayankk: Key themes seem obvious but piecing them together is what makes it insane I guess.

1. Rook sac on h7 followed by a Queen check is definitely visually appealing.

2. Should the e pawn move, then this can be coupled with another strong check by Queen on f7.

3. This suggest Rh7+, Nf5, Qh5 and Qf7+ in some order.

Unfortunately that’s all I can think of, in my short 2-minute attention span before my patience gives away and I check the answer..

An Englishman: Good Evening: Tricky. 20.Rxh7+,Kxh7; 21.Qh5+,Kg7; 22.Nxf5+ does not transpose, as Black can play 22...Kf8.

al wazir: I got the first four moves, which should be enough for full credit, since white has more than one way to proceed from there. (For example, 24. Rxd7 instead of 24. Qxf6+ also wins.)
Dec-24-17  diagonalley: hmmmm...must have been a relatively easy sunday, since <diagonalley> unusually made similar progress to the posters above... btw... merry xmas guys... (make the most of it - the portents for 2018 are not good)
Dec-24-17  Walter Glattke: 22.Nf5+ Kf8 23.Ne6 Be8! ... Instead of 24.Qxf6+ white can play 24.Rd3
Dec-24-17  Pawn Slayer: I got this, but would never have got it over the board, which is why I'm not a GM, I guess.

When you get the hint that there is a winning move sequence due to it being a Chessgames puzzle, you look for things you might not consider in an actual game.

Anyway, a Happy Christmas and a prosperous and peaceful New Year to all on Chessgames.

Dec-24-17  Sularus: failed to solve this
Dec-24-17  Cheapo by the Dozen: By <al wazir>'s scoring method, I solved this. By some other standards I did not. :)
Dec-24-17  patzer2: Fascinating Sunday (20. ?) puzzle. The first eight moves of the combination 20. Nxf5! exf5 21. Rh7+ Kxh7 22. Qh5+ Kg7 23. Qxf7+ Kh6 24. Qxf6+ Rg6 25. Qh4+ Kg7 26. Qe7+ Kh6 27. Rxd7 Qxc4 seemed to almost play themselves in my guess-the-move calculation.

It was only in pondering White's 9th move of the combination after 27...Qxc4 (diagram below)

that I experienced difficulty.

Here (diagram above) I blew the puzzle solution on the ninth move of the combination with 28. Rd4? which allows Black a Houdini-like escape with 28...Re6! (diagram below).

After 28. Rd4? Re6! (diagram above), White has nothing better than a draw by three-fold perpetual with 29. Rh4+ Kg6 30. Qh7+ Kf6 31. Qh6+ Kf7 32. Qh7+ Kf6 33. Qh6+ Kf7 34. Qh7+ Kf6 35. Qh6+ =.

Correct of course are White's 9th and 10th moves of the combination with 28. Qh7+! Kg5 29. Rd4 +- (+5.31 @ 32 ply, Stockfish 8) which avoid any miracle save possibilities for Black.

However, the computer finds an even stronger win for White on the 9th move of the combination with 28. Qe3+!! (diagram below)

click for larger view

28...f4 (28...Rg5 29. Qh3+ Rh5 30. Rd6+ +-; 28...Kh5 29. Rh7+ Rh6 30. Rxh6+ Kg4 31. f3#) 29. Qe7 +- (+15.10 @ 35 ply, Stockfish 8).

Dec-24-17  patzer2: Black's decisive mistake was 19...Bd7?, obstructing the Black Queen's defense of f7 and allowing today's Sunday puzzle solution 20. Nxf5! +- (+1.81 @ 32 ply, Stockfish 8).

Instead, 19...a6 20. Rdd3 Rg4 21. Bb3 b5 22. Qd2 Bg5 23. Qe1 Bf6 24. Qd2 = (0.00 @ 29 depth, Stockfish 8) holds it level.

Dec-24-17  WorstPlayerEver: 29. Rd4 is the key move, took me a while.
Dec-24-17  thegoodanarchist: I got it!
Dec-24-17  agb2002: White has a bishop and a knight for the bishop pair.

Black is about to play Rg7, reinforcing the castle and looking for chances along the g-file (Bxd4, Bc6, etc.).

The first idea that comes to mind is 20.Rxh7+ Kxh7 21.Qh5+ but after 21... Kg7 White cannot play Qxf7+. Therefore, 20.Nxf5:

A) 20... exf5 21.Rxh7+ Kxh7 22.Qh5+ Kg7 23.Qxf7+ (the bishop will also stop any counterchance based on Rxg2+ and Rg8+)

A.1) 23... Kh8 24.Rxd7

A.1.a) 24... Rg7 25.Qh5+ Rh7 26.Qxh7#.

A.1.b) 24... Bg7 25.Qh5+ Bh6 26.Qxh6#.

A.1.c) 24... Qxd7 25.Qxd7 Rad8 26.Qxf5 Rd1+ 27.Bf5 + - [Q+4P vs 2r].

A.1.d) 24... Qxc4 25.Qh7#.

A.2) 23... Kh6 24.Qxf6+ (24.Rxd7 Qxc4 25.Qxf6+ Rg6 26.Qxf5 Qg4)

A.2.a) 24... Rg6 25.Qh4+ Kg7 26.Qe7+ followed by 27.Rxd7 wins decisive material.

A.2.b) 24... Kh7 25.Qf7+

A.2.b.i) 25... Rg7 26.Qh7#.

A.2.b.ii) 25... Kh6 26.Rxd7 looks winning (26... Qc6 27.Qh7+ Kg5 28.Bxg8).

A.2.b.iii) 25... Kh8 26.Rxd7 wins decisive material.

B) 20... B(Q)c6 21.Rxh7+ Kxh7 22.Qh5#.

C) 20... Rg6 21.Qh5 h6 22.Nxh6 wins two pawns at least (22... Qxc4 23.Nxf7+ Kg2 24.Qh7+ Kf8 25.Qxg6).

Dec-24-17  wtpy: Darn it. So I looked at 20 Rh7 Kh7 21 Qh5 Kf7 22 Nf5 Kf8 and couldn't see a continuation. And one of the things I have learned in solving problems is to alternate move order so I went back and looked at 20 Rh7 Kh7 21 Nf5 trying to cut off the escape of king but Rg5 made a hash of that, and then I just got frustrated and quit rather than taking my process to the logical point of looking at Nf5 first. When will I ever learn? (A rhetorical question I seem to be posing to myself more and more about various aspects of life.)
Dec-24-17  agb2002: I stopped calculation too soon.

Merry Christmas to everyone!

Dec-24-17  malt: Did not see it.

A Merry Christmas, to all, on Chessgames

Dec-24-17  WorstPlayerEver: Merry Christmas!

Jimfromprovidence: FWIW, it seems like there is an alternative winning version of the game line 20 Nxf5 exf5 21.Rxh7+ Kxh7 22.Qh5+ Kg7 23.Qxf7+ Kh6, diverging with <24 Rxd7>, below.

click for larger view

The idea is 25 Qxf6+ Kh5 (forced) 26 Bf7+ with mate to follow.

Dec-24-17  mel gibson: The computer agrees:

20.Nxf5 (20. Nxf5 (♘d4xf5 ♖g8-g5 ♘f5-d6 ♗d7-a4 ♗c4-b3 ♗a4xb3 ♕e2-e4 ♖g5-g6) +1.71/20 375)

score for White +1.71 depth 20.

Black can't take the Knight or:

20.
Nxf5 exf5 21. Rxh7+ (21. Rxh7+ (♖h3xh7+ ♔h8xh7 ♕e2-h5+ ♔h7-g7 ♕h5xf7+ ♔g7-h8 ♖d1xd7 ♕c7xd7 ♕f7xd7 ♖g8-g6 ♕d7xb7 ♖a8-e8 g2-g3 ♖g6-g7 ♕b7-f3 ♖e8-f8 ♕f3xf5 ♖g7-h7 h2-h4 ♗f6-e7 ♕f5-e5+ ♗e7-f6 ♕e5-f4 ♗f6-g7 ♕f4-e3 a7-a5 ♕e3-g5 a5-a4) +5.77/17 78)

score for White +5.77 depth 17.

So therefore 20...PxN is a blunder by Black.

Dec-24-17  BOSTER: How noticed < chrisowen > after 20... Rg5 the combo'll disappear.
Dec-24-17  WorstPlayerEver: SF8 thinks 27. Rd4 is strongest
