Kibitzer's Corner
May-28-16  Keshav Murali: Is it just me, or was 34...Rd7 possibly the worst move in that position???

Maybe Hou was seeking a quick end instead of 34...Re7 35. Rxe7 Bxe7 36. Ng6

May-28-16  beenthere240: After Rxe8 Qxe8+, white is able to force a draw by repetition, so Huo resigned.
May-28-16  thegoodanarchist: <beenthere240: After Rxe8 Qxe8+, white is able to force a draw by repetition, so Huo resigned.>

That's one theory, sure.

Or, 35...Rxe8 36.Qxe8+ and then 37.Qxd7

May-28-16  CJC: Well, 34...Kf8 was worse! Maybe she was in time trouble, so she couldn't find it.
May-28-16  cunctatorg: I don't declare that Yifan Hou should better follow Uncle Nimzowitsch's instructions and blockade the damn P-K5, these GM know much better than me; however I believe that one of the major problems Black is facing in this glorious and extremely interesting and intriguing variation is the problem with White's P-K5...
May-29-16  Ulhumbrus: After 15...0-0 White's position seems unsatisfactory owing to Black's d3 pawn. The manoeuvre Be3-d4 changes the picture by transforming Black's d3 pawn from a strong weapon into a weak target.

This suggests 15...Qd5 at once instead of 15...0-0 eg 16 Be3 Nd8 17 Bd4 c5. This in turn suggests 15 Be3 at once instead of 15 Re1. On 15...Qd5 16 Bd4 Nd8 17 Bxd3 (??) Bxd3 18 Qxd3 the bishop on d4 is pinned and invites 18...c5

Suppose that instead of 17...Rfd8 as played Black frees the c pawn by 17...Nd8. Then on 18 Bxd3 ( ??) Bxd3 19 Qxd3 the bishop on d4 is pinned and invites the attack 19...c5.

This suggests 18 b4 in reply to 17...Nd8. In that case one idea for Black as <cunctatorg> has suggested is 17...Ne6 blockading the e5 pawn

For that matter on 15...Qd5 16 Be3 Nd8 White can play 17 b4 instead of 17 Bxd3.

May-29-16  ChemMac: <Keshav Murali> After 34...Re7 35. Rxe7 Bxe7 36. Ng6; if Black plays 36...Qe6, then 37 Qf5 wins the B. Else Black can just lose the exchange...
May-29-16  patzer2: The computers indicate 27...h5? allowing 28. Qg6 (+2.31 @ 33 depth, Komodo 9.02) was the decisive mistake.

Instead, 27...g6 28. Rbe1 Re8 (+0.86 @ 34 depth, Komodo 9.02) gives Black a fighting chance.

Earlier, 24...e5 25. Bxe5 Nxe5 26. Rxe5 (0.54 @ 29 depth, Komodo 10) appears to be an improvement for Black.

Jun-02-16  veerar: Black's White square weakness.
