Honza Cervenka: I would have played 30.Bxg7+ but "quiet" 30.Re4 is just fine.
Feb-02-24  eaglewing: A bit too greedy with 24. ... Nxg1+?

Instead 24. ... fg 25. Qxg6 Ne5 is a pawn down, but Black looks much more active compared to 24. ... Nxg1+, because Ra1 and Ra8 both need activation.

HeMateMe: Just for us '80s guys!

Always liked Hou and the Muzychuk sisters, great chess players, great representatives of the game.

Must have been painful for Mariya M. when she saw 30.R-e4 was coming.

24...fxg6 25.Qxg6 Ne5 26.Qe4 Rae8 27.f4 wins a piece. Black is lost after 19...Be7, if not earlier.

Honza Cervenka: <Must have been painful for Mariya M. when she saw 30.R-e4 was coming.> I guess that 30.Bxg7+ would not make her happier. In fact, maybe she was glad that her misery was over.

Same here. :)

Feb-02-24  Autoreparaturwerkbau: I'm pretty sure that in hindsight Mariya wished to play 17...Nfd7 instead, leading to a much more balanced game.
Feb-02-24  paavoh: Which Dire Straits song is up next? We had Walk of Life yesterday.

FSR: Black should play 2...d4! Opening Explorer shows that Black already scores 52.2% from that position. Why on earth would Black accept the standard small disadvantage rather than seizing the initiative?
Feb-02-24  Arlekhino: Great game, great pun.

I strongly recommend "Calling Elvis".
