Jul-25-18		patzer2: For today's Wednesday puzzle(29...?), the decoy sham sacrifice 29...Re1+! forces 30. Kf1 which allows the discovered attack with check 30...Bxf2+! -+ (-5.50 @ 20 ply, Stockfish 9) that wins the unprotected White Queen. The tempting Queen fork 30...Qe4+? 31. Kd2 Qxb7 ⩱ (-0.53 @ 20 ply, Stockfish 9 analysis of move 31.?) picks off the unprotected Rook, but misses the win and isn't good for much more than equality. White's game takes a turn for the worse with 24. a4?!, allowing Black to win a pawn with the discovered attack 24...Nxa4 ⩱ (-0.46 @ 35 ply, Stockfish 8). Instead, 24. Bg3 = (0.00 @ 36 ply, Stockfish 8) keeps it level. White's game goes from bad to clearly lost after 29. Kf1?, allowing today's Wednesday puzzle solution 29...Re1+! -+. Instead, 29. Kh1 Qf6 ∓ (-1.35 @ 36 ply, Stockfish 8) maximizes resistance.

Jul-25-18		agb2002: Black has a bishop and a pawn for a knight. White threatens Qxa6. The white queen is defenseless and the knight blocks Qxf2#. Hence, 29... Re1+: A) 30.Kxe1 Bxf2+ 31.Kxf2 Qxc4 + - [q+2p vs R+N] (32.Ne5 Qd5+ o 32.Ng5 Qh4+ wins the knight in both cases). B) 30.Nxe1 Qxf2#.

Jul-25-18		Mayankk: Simple enough. White Queen is unguarded and in the firing line of Black Queen - so a move with check from Black Bishop will lead to its doom. So you lure the king into a ‘checkable’ square and then check it. Pocket a Queen and spawn in exchange for Rook and Bishop and that is probably enough of a winning advantage.

Jul-25-18		patzer2: Black's strong move 28...Qf4! sets a couple of traps for White. If 29. Kf1?, then 29...Re1+! -+ wins as in the game. If 29. Qxa6?, then White wins with 29...Re1+! 30. Nxe1 Qxf2+ -+ (diagram below) click for larger view which forces mate-in three more moves after 30. Kh2 (30. Kh1 Qg1#) 30...Be5+ 31. Kh1 Qxe1+ 32. Qf1 Qxf1#.

Jul-25-18		lost in space: Got it, but had to check, if the endposition is really won for Black. Only having a queen for a knight and and rook is not enough in all positions. But here we have an open board (good for the side with the queen), the Black king has luft and Black has 5 pawns versus 3. Should be enough.

Jul-25-18		stacase: OK, it wasn't Monday easy but pretty easy just the same. Black can discover an attack on White's unprotected Queen and it's a simple matter of figuring out how that that can be made to happen and say check at the same time.

Jul-25-18		hdcc: An easier puzzle than yesterday - Tuesday thinks it's Wednesday, and Wednesday thinks it's Tuesday. It's not just a position over which we puzzle, but a juxtaposition of positions. My position on this is that it is simply not just: these two days of doubt and discombobulation almost count as spoilers of the reverse psychology variety.

Jul-25-18		CHESSTTCAMPS: Black is up bishop + pawn for a knight, with white striving for counter play (inadequately) against f7. Black has a nice shot that exploits the bad position of the white queen: 29... Re1+! 30.Kxe1 (Nxe1 Qxf2#) Bxf2+ 31.Kxf2 Qxc4 and mid-range tournament players should be able to win this even against a strong engine.
