Dec-28-17  luzhin: What an exquisite mating net White weaves with the four minor pieces.Good taste by McShane to play Bxg2 and allow this work of art to appear on the board.

offramp: Ganguly played this game like he had a train to catch to meet a hot date in the hottest hotspot in Chennai.

He did NOT mess about.

<100pt splash heading here: <HE TOOK ROUTE 1 FROM MOVE 1!>>

The opening is a kind of a Dutch. I have seen that opening taken apart occasionally but I am not aware of the latest theory.

7. h5!
Very good, giving up a pawn.
7...Nxh5
8. Rxh5!!
Bunging in the exchange as well. Is this the way people play White against the Dutch these days? Das ist jetzt ein ding?

But McShane is not bad enough to be rolled over in 15 moves from a standard opening. He develops and puts a strong knight on d4.

13. Rd3. A rook-lift, or a lift-rook.
Black has problems defending his h-pawn. But he may not have cared. He may have looked at the pieces on f1 and g1, and thought of putting his king on e7, ♗ on b7, then crashing through the centre with a resounding counterattack that would have led to spontaneous applause from the spectators. Or something.

15. Qxh7+ Kf8
16. Qh8+!

Now he throws in the queen, and they ain't makin' those any more.

White's 4 pieces move forward and gradually surround the black king, leading to the artistic finished mentioned by <Luzhin>.

A triumph of vouloir and élan over pouvoir and Elo. McShane out-rates Ganguly by 79 points!

Jan-01-18  ChessHigherCat: McShane must have underestimated the threat of mate because he could have played 32. Rf8 f4 33. Rxf7 Nxf7+ 34. Kg7 which is probably losing, too, but at least it staves off mate.

16. Qh8 was a fantastic combination for blitz and trickier than it looks: 16. Qh8+ Ke7 17. Bg5+ Bf6 18. Bxf6+ Rxf6 19. Qxf6+ Kd7 20. Rh7+ Kc6 21. Qxd8
