Kibitzer's Corner
Apr-26-21  Lupara: This is Caruana's first win against Wang Hao in classical time control.
Apr-26-21  Ulhumbrus: Caruana makes his bishop count by advancing his king side pawns. If he enjoys greater liberty to advance them without risk of losing this suggests that this privilege is conferred by having not only the bishop pair but by having a bishop against a knight as well.
Apr-26-21  DouglasGomes: Very ugly and weak moves from White

An Englishman: Good Morning: 9...Bd7 does not appear in the CG database, but the idea of playing ...b7-b5 and/or ...Bc6 seems pretty good. However, 12...Nc6 *might* have allowed White a slight edge with the game continuation because of Black's inferior Bishop. After 12...dxe4; 13.Nxe5(dxe5!?) the position looks closer to equality because each side has an inferior Bishop.

Richard Taylor: 9....Nc6 looks more natural. This line by Black is well known. Somehow White has to get an attack going against Black. Overall the d5 line for Black is better on paper so to speak. It wasn't so bad by White. It is just that he did find a good plan. Caruana mucked around. Not too convincing by Caruana, but he played carefully and slowly go a small advantage. I believe, or it seems that, Wang Hao is out of form. But it has been a difficult tournament with the interruption and so on.

HeMateMe: Caruana wins a game he HAD to win to stay in contention. That's a sign of a great player, showing up when the pressure is at it's greatest.
Apr-27-21  RookFile: It's a nice game, but I don't believe Caruana had any chance to get to first place.
Apr-27-21  YetiBlitz: Strange. Wang Hao seemed keen to enter the middle game with the two knights against bishop and knight, but then didn't appear to have any strategy once he got there. Passive play allowed Caruana to gain and sequentially tighten a small advantage.
