 | | fredthebear: Ding Liren is bringing the HEAT! Three straight victories, two with the Black pieces. |
Jul-01-22 | | Ulhumbrus: If after 18 Ng7 the knight achieves little and has to withdraw an alternative is 18 Ne3 with f4 to follow later Ding Liren outplayed Caruana, either because Ding Liren played better overall and made fewer mistakes or because Caruana mis-managed his clock and then lacked time to think when he needed the time. The computer evaluations suggest that 75 Bc7? is a losing mistake. This ties White's rook to the defence of his bishop but it is not obvious why that loses. The main reason is that Black's invasion of the second rank by eg...Re2+ is a potential winning threat. In order to cover this rank White's rook needs access to the second rank. However if it is tied to the defence of the bishop it becomes confined to the c file as well, and so has access to just one single square on the second rank, the square c2. That square is however a white square and when the black bishop attacks it the white rook is unable to go there to defend the second rank. This seems useful to know about. Caruana may have known all this and a great deal more but he may also have been short of time by now. |
Jul-01-22 | | SChesshevsky: Believe this is all computer approved theory until 26. Qxe1. Ding seems to err with 26...Rxb3. Kind of getting the rook stuck and getting on the back foot. Unclear as to why Caruana loses his mind after 50. Qf3. Likely best to accept a draw. And probably enough ways to accomplish this. But not with 53. Qb3+ and pushing with pretty much everything hanging. Hard to explain. |
Jul-01-22 | | Olavi: There was nothing in it for Caruana if he took the draw. Psychologically it must have been easier for Ding, because just a couple of rounds ago he was far behind. Now he might even catch Nepo (very very unlikely). |
Jul-01-22 | | ILikeKeres: Poor Caruana!
As <Ulhumbrus> pointed out, 75.Bc7?? is quite a blunder. |
Jul-01-22 | | jerseybob: Wow, an update in posted results and it's not good news for Fabby. Looks like we're due for Magnus-Nepo II(and no I don't believe Magnus is stepping down!). As for the game itself, if facing the Marshall is so distasteful, (kind of like the Berlin before the 4.d3 fad) and you must play the Ruy, how about somebody revving up the old Thomas Emery line 8.c3,d5 9.d4!? just for shock value? |

Jul-06-22 | | jerseybob: <Ulhumbrus: ....The computer evaluations suggest that 75 Bc7? is a losing mistake.> You seem skeptical of that claim and so am I. I'd like to see a simple drawing strategy(not a thicket of Stockfish gobbletygook) that gives white a draw. If rooks were off the board it might be drawable. |
Jul-06-22 | | SChesshevsky: <...a simple drawing strategy...> Doesn't look simple but I guess the idea is for a pseudo blockade. The B holds the pawns, the R holds the second rank allowing K the key f2 square. Also via e1 or even e3. Looks fragile so precision is probably mandatory. Given time and a different circumstance, Caruana probably would've come up with the construction. But coming in fatigued and this tiring game where he knew he was a lot better earlier made it a lot tougher. Think the big error was not looking for an easier draw earlier versus getting into an extremely difficult hold later. |

Nov-11-22 | | tbontb: A game coloured by the tense tournament situation with both players "needing" to win to stay in contention. Caruana White was better for much of the time until 50. Be5 allowed Ding Black to fight back to equality with 55. ....Kg7. After 57. Be3 (better Qd5) the advantage passed to Black. As noted above, at the end 75. Bc7 was a losing blunder (when 75. Rc8 Re7 76. Rc2 f4 was possibly the last chance to hold). |
