GrahamClayton: Does anyone know how Schakel acquired the nickname of "Corky"?

perfidious: A friend played him in the prelims of the 13th USCCC in the late 1990s, but never shed any light on the mystery.

  FSR: He's very buoyant?
Dec-30-23  FM David H. Levin: I just got off the phone with Mr. Schakel (with whom I was previously unacquainted). It turns out that for decades, he had thought that the nickname "Corky" came from the comic strip "Gasoline Alley." However, a few years ago, he learned that the real reason was that when his father had seen him squirming about when about two months old, he remarked that the boy was a "corker." Mr. Schakel said that he much preferred "Corky" to his given name and started going by it regularly.
Dec-30-23  FM David H. Levin: One more thing: Mr. Schakel asked that his bio include his tenure as National Delegate to the ICCF Congress from 2007 to 2015 (which he also mentioned in an interview at https://www.iccfus.com/170315News.htm).

Check It Out: Thank you, FM Levin. This detail is one reason why I like this site so much.
Dec-30-23  stone free or die: FWIW - <Gasoline Alley> is a great American comic strip. I believe it was noted as being exceptional not only for its insights into ordinary life in the US, but also because it was one of the first (if not the first) strip where the characters aged.

FSR: I didn't know <Gasoline Alley> was still around. Turns out it is 105 years old. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gasol...
Dec-31-23  stone free or die: Yes, <FSR>, it the longest running strip still active. But the Katzenjammer Kids (which ended in 2006) still has it beat with 109 years.

Here's a sample of the strip from the early days:
