perfidious: <Whitehat1963: CEO of Bear Stearns? AIG? Lehman Brothers?>

Goldman Sachs, perhaps?

Crooked or not, they don't have a bedbug problem. That's what they said, so it must be so.

perfidious: Y'all wanted a page dedicated to cheating in chess, and this was the proposed spot. Sounds appropriate to me, and with this post I shall have a go at diverting all the efforts which have hitherto been made over at Borislav Ivanov's little domicile.

First off, I must aver that I am <not> A Crook!

Sep-18-13  thomastonk: <perfidious> Dr. Arthur Crook was an important member and president of the honourable Norwich and Norfolk Chess Club, which is in existence at least since 1836. I consider it is a very bad idea to misuse <his> page.

  MissScarlett: Daily Mirror, July 13th 1939, p.7:

<CHESS LURES HIM

Dr. Arthur Crook, of Norwich, has retired and moved to London - because he wants to be near the new national chess headquarters which open in September in Cavendish-square.

Outside his medical career the game of chess has been the doctor's chief interest since he was a boy. He is now seventy-three.

Dr. Crook has chosen his own epitaph — "He never refused a game chess."

"I have directed that it be inscribed on my gravestone," he says. "I hope they will do it. Of course, the vicar may object."

Dr. Crook is already a member of the chess centre. His new home is a few minutes' walk from the headquarters.

He has been a member of the Norfolk and Norwich Chess Club for nearly half a century, and won many victories for Norfolk County Chess Association, which he always represented in tournaments. —Sent by Mrs. H. Watson, 64, Brian-avenue, Norwich.>

He didn't enjoy the National Chess Centre for long. In September 1940, the Germans bombed it out of existence:

A good find.

I wonder if he ever got his wish about his epitaph.

He organised the Lasker simul he took part.

"The British Chess Magazine for January, 1901 reported in November 28th, the President (Dr. Crook) celebrated the opening of the new rooms by giving a reception to the players of the district , and invited Dr. E. Lasker to give a simultaneous display for their entertainment ."

and:

"A great stalwart, both as a player and a club official in those early days, was W.G.Crook, who died aged 66, in 1895. His son, Dr.A.Crook, similarly gave the club yeoman service."

MissScarlett: Talking of English chess explosions:

<Vera Menchik was the manager of the British National Chess Centre until it was destroyed by fire (during The Blitz) on the 23rd September 1940. At that time it was the largest chess club in London with over 700 members. The contents of the Chess centre were entirely destroyed. The entire property of the SCCU, the best half of the BCF library, all the finer old four-handed equipment, some Kent trophies and records were all gone. Only the SCCU's Shannon Trophy was recovered and repaired some time later.>

Other sites agree that the John Lewis store was bombed on September 18th. I should point out that Cavendish Square backs onto Oxford St.

Sally Simpson: Apparently 'X' marks the spot where the London Chess Centre once stood.

Maybe the Chess Centre was targeted by the Luftwaffe to try and get the Chess players who worked at Bletchley Park.

To name a few. Alexander, Golombek, Milner-Barry, Jack Good (who was the chess advisor in 2001 A Space Odyssey.), James Aitken and Prof. Donald Michie.

or probably not...but no harm is starting up yet another internet rumour to go with 1001 others already there. (add in Alekhine pinpointed the location on a map of London and some people will actually believe it. )

Tabanus: 1939 census has him born 4 April 1866, married, retired medical practitioner, at the census time a visitor in Grand Hotel Kings Road Brighton Sussex.

"Woods/McConnell/Ehrlich/Karst" family tree has father William Gustavus Crook (1827–1895) and mother Adelon Clarissa Elizabeth Windett (1830–1923), and that he died 1942 in Wayland, Norfolk.

(I'm not convinced about Wayland 1942, but it may be right). He married to Annie about 1898-99 and apparently had no children.
