cu8sfan: Soon a new Bishop of Rome will be elected. Check out my newest Game Collection: Habemus Pappam!

This might be especially interesting to <Sneaky> for his Game Collection: Underpromotions.

Apr-08-05  cuendillar: <drukenknught> Not sure it's authentic, but... http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail...

The "chess composer" part is probably just a false rumour: http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail... I have seen this piece of information on other places as well.

However the act that the pope will be remembered for could be his contacts with other religions (Visiting a mosque and a synagogue + forgiving for the crusades)

Apr-08-05  notsodeepthought: <cu8sfan> <Soon a new Bishop of Rome will be elected. Check out my newest Game Collection: Habemus Pappam!> Very nice collection, with perhaps one minor flaw: the games with TWO promotions to bishop may not be the best analogy to the papal election. We wouldn't want two (or more) popes... which can lead to messy consequences: http://www.jeanlouie.com/Trivias/tw...
Apr-08-05  Chris00nj: <cu8sfan:> Very nice collection. It's surprising that there have been that many promotions to bishops.

P.S. only one 'p' in Habemus Papam!

cu8sfan: <notsodeepthought> I don't think it's a flaw of my collection. There have been cases where an elected pope died soon after being elected - for whatever reasons. Just think of Pope John Paul I! And please note that in both games where there are two promotions to a bishop the one that promoted first is taken by the opponent before the next bishop is promoted!

<Chris00nj> Thanks for your help. Latin class is a long time ago!

Apr-08-05  ChessMan94: HEY GUYS!!!!

This Kibitzer's Corner is for John Pope, a US Master from California. Not the Pope!!!

Yes, many pages don't talk about their specific subject. At least we are discussing it on a page, that otherwise wouldn't have any comments. It's not like we picked the Nakamura page, or heaven forbid, the Kosteniuk page.

Apr-09-05  notsodeepthought: <cu8sfan> <There have been cases where an elected pope died soon after being elected - for whatever reasons. Just think of Pope John Paul I!> Now, now, let's not be too cynical - I know there were rumors going around after his death about a sinister plot to get rid of him, but he was in his mid to late 60s, and he did have a high-pressure job.

lostemperor: They just elected a new pope. John pope III?
Apr-19-05  knightspot: Bush and Kerry actually were planning a chess match, but Bush couldn't figure out how to move the pieces with the little horse heads . .
Apr-19-05  notsodeepthought: <lostemperor> Just once I would like to see a pope choose a name that isn't on the traditional list - Hamish the First, say - though I know it won't happen.
Apr-19-05  Stevens: <in both games where there are two promotions to a bishop> This brings to mind something i thought of a while ago. Is it possible to promote to a bishop and end up with 2 light squared bishops (ie you still have the original bishop on the board as well as the new one)? I don't remember seeing any games where this has happened but i don't ever remember reading a rule that forbids it.

lostemperor: <notsodeepthought> I'm sorry to say the name has become official: <Benedictus>, and he is the 16th with that name. Before Josef Radzinger (I hope I write this correctly) from Germany. I now see a Bishop promoted to Pope;)
Apr-19-05  Swapmeet: <Stevens> Yes its perfectly legal, but you'd probably only do something like that to avoid a stalemate, or if you just wanted to torture your helpless opponent.
Apr-19-05  cuendillar: Now that we have a new pope, should we discuss him under R Pope (R as in Ratzinger)? I can only say it wasn't unexpected
Apr-19-05  Milo: Cuendillar: are you going to Mexico this summer for the Olympiad? (Your bio suggests you might be...)
Apr-21-05  Milo: The second day of tryouts for the US team was today... let's just say I don't think I made it :). I was happy to get to USAMO though.

Anyone else take it?

Mar-23-06  vesivialvy93: cardinal Josef Ratzinger vs pope JP2 ....
1980 is someone can find that game , the game exist but i don't know the results...?
Oct-29-06  Archives: Father Karras, your mother is here with us....
Oct-29-06  Monoceros: I must not be the only one who thought of the (incompetent) Civil War general when I saw "John Pope"?
Oct-31-06  Archives: What a nice day, for an exorcism!
Sep-02-08  ILikeFruits: pope sees all...
pope hears all...
pope knows all...
Nov-20-08  Crocomule: Is the John Pope in Searching for B.F. based on the California master?
Jun-30-09  cuendillar: I got a good laugh when discovering that one of the pope's titles is "primate of Italy". No wonder they seem to monkey around sometimes...
