Phony Benoni: No, it appears to be <George Archer Hooke> (1857-1934). See this item from Edward Winter, given by <FSR> on the game page: http://www.chesshistory.com/winter/.... _5165

Hooke was a good enough player to make the British team for the 1903 cable match with the USA, where he lost on board 10 to Hermann Helms.

On Saturday he had been playing in a stiff game for some two hours, and on a piece being won he observed, "That ends the game," and suddenly passed away. [...]>

Feb-19-24  stone free or die: <"That ends the game," and suddenly passed away. >

Sounds a tad apocryphal.

Feb-20-24  stone free or die: Well, it was a <stiff> game after all.
