Feb-19-21  Ybr: <Willber G: Is there a particular one you recommend?>

There are two kinds of god , supposedly - (i) the god that one can directly 'see'/'perceive' (ii) the god that you yourself can not 'perceive ' directly but some prophet/messiah perceived and you believe experience of that prophet/messiah (even though that experience could be schizophrenia - prophet heard voices and thought god was talking , for example. So, it is about faith).

2) <thegoodanarchist> knows only about god of second kind , so that is what he reccomends. Hearsay , an inference - <tga> has some experience and <tga> thinks that is a spiritual experience and infers that such an experience possible only if god existed. But then <tga> did not perceive this god directly , so rest everything about this god , <tga> learns through hearsay - what his prophet told him.

Feb-20-21  thegoodanarchist: <Willber G: Is there a particular one you recommend?>

Jesus Christ.

Feb-20-21  thegoodanarchist: <Sokrates: The god of pettiness, hypocrazy, fanatism and stupidity seems to rule over a large part of the world.>

Let us not blame God for the actions of people who, for the most part, don't even follow Him.

Hmm, I'll have a ponder. There are so many to choose from.

Not only that , if you take recommendation of <thegoodanarchist> , you will also need to decide whether to choose catholicism or one of the 40000 flavors of protestantism and such . Recently , <tga> , <big pawn> , <ohiochessfan> and <optimal play> had a very acrimonious/abusive debate over which of them is a true christian - debate spanned over weeks. Finally they decided they they should stop turning themselves into laughing stock and in the name of free speech , instead of spewing venom at each other , they should collectively spew venom at their 'common enemies' like 'godless liberals '

Feb-20-21  Z 000000001: <<tga> Why don't you try seeking God?>

I think you said this in earnest, and thank you for the sentiment. Regards.

I apologize for my malplaced irony. Since I don't believe in any god at all, there is no one to blame but human beings including myself. Sorry!

It seems that way, but there really is only 1.

It's like having a time machine, only not a delux model that is state of the art. Rather, a "loaner" from the dealer.

No apology necessary - you did not offend me in the least.

I just want to leave our conversation with a word of encouragement: seek and ye shall find.

Check It Out: <CG> Are you aware that the puzzle of the day has been repeating puzzles of the day from one month ago, chronologically?

Nope! St. John the Evangelist style.

His enemies tried to boil him in oil, but he wouldn't boil.

After, he had a revelation.

Susan Freeman: Dear members. Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I will have a talk with PoTD man. My apologies.
Feb-24-21  MrMelad: What's with all the poping adds? I'm going over a game and all the sudden an add that I've already got ridden of comes back exactly to where my mouse is placed so that when I click to go to the next move the add opens. I've blacklisted websites for less.

Also, why on earth do I still need to be a premium member in order to search for kibitzes? Can you imagine a forum in which I'm unable to search text freely?? How can I even know if someone posted a reply to any of my messages here? Should I go over all my posts from the past 15 years and check them one by one? And what if I want to know if people are talking about some topic I'm interested with, do I need to open every single page?

Please advance to 2021 thank you.

Feb-24-21  George Wallace: All of <MrMelad's> points are valid and his annoyance seems to be justified, but more importantly, his annoyance is instructive.

People will tell you the truth when they're drunk or angry, but either way, the truth is extremely valuable.

Perhaps a poll, a real one with buttons one can click to indicate the answers to the questions, as in a poll on some kind of form, would be beneficial to the owner of this website. You could get some ideas this way.

But that won't tell you what people out there on the internet, that is, those people who are not members here, are thinking or what they want. The average age of the members of this site is somewhere around 92 years old, so they don't like no new fangled ideas and sure as hell don't want any damn thing to change.

So asking current members for their input will only go so far.

The bottom line is this: a good website offers a good user experience. A big part of delivering a good user experience is to meet expectations. In 2021, the average internet user has certain expectations formed by his interaction with all the other websites on planet Earth.

It's like going to a restaurant and they have no napkins, or no ketchup, or they want to charge you for the ketchup and salt. That won't work because we have other expectations.

In 2002, this website filled a void. You could find chess games here that you couldn't find elsewhere, and you could print them out and play over them at your leisure if you wanted - which is what I did in 2002. That void no longer exists, so this site has lost its unique value.

What then should it do?

What shouldn't it do?

It shouldn't be a crappy user experience for one thing. Intrusive ads will irritate people, but does that mean they'll become members to avoid the ads? Or will they simply find their way back to Social Media Land? I think the latter is more likely.

<Melad> is right. Imagine a forum where you can't use the search function to find information. That's bizarre.

Perhaps there could be other reasons to go premium? The opening explorer is one, but how about the "guess the move" feature?

It seems to me that this site has the same sort of value as a Wikipedia kind of site. People can come here and read detailed bios on chess players throughout history. It seems to be a niche that chess players really enjoy.

Maybe premium members can:

1. Use opening explorer
2. Open their own forum
3. Use the guess the move feature
4. Have private message privileges
5. Be alerted if their name is posted
6. Use the analysis engine
7. Not see ads
8. Use the ignore feature
9. Post more than 3 times a day
10. Have their own custom avatar

  stevemcd87: Hello everyone,

Sorry about the PotD, the problem usually occurs when we try to use a game for the puzzle that was recently used(whether or not the move number is different).
I'm still working on finding the gid that would've caused this issue.
Here are some puzzles for some extra amusement today, our sincerest apologies.(White to play for all)

Sunday: Vladimirov vs Epishin, 1987
Monday: Buhmann vs B Saeheng, 2008
