Some years ago I came up with a new but simple system to calculate the final standings of a tournament including all players. This is how it goes:

For each correct standing you'll get a maximum amount of points. Each prediction deviation from the actual player standing in the tournament, will deduct one point from your total (ABSOLUTE RANKER).

In case of a shared player's standing the average standing counts (both actual and in your predictions).

The SQUARE RANKER, squares your predictions' deviations. Here only medals are awarded if the winner s is not the same person s as in the absolute ranker.

Same goes for the The PAIR BETTING RANKER compare all possible pair outcomes of the tournament participants.

The three best predictions will get Real Virtual Gold Silver and Bronze!

Note: only one set of medals is awarded (in the absolute ranker) unless another ranker produces a different winner.

Special thanks to <YouRang> who made a software to calculate these numbers.

Our new contest manager for game results prediction User: Golden Executive during the tournament also ([1-0], [1/2], [0-1])!

or predict the # of moves in User: ohiochessfan organized by <chessmoron>

Enjoy!

Oct-13-09  DCP23: <lostemperor: The hardest thing IMO is to predict who is going to finish first or last! :)>

Sometimes it's easy. For example, in London 2009 the last place is reserved for David Howell. And he's not even the lowest-rated (that would be McShane), and yet there's no way around it -- Howell will be in last place.

lostemperor: <DCP23> when was/is that in London?

As for the Tal memorial, Carlsen would be favourite but he might have a more difficult run now than in Pearl Spring. But if not Carlsen who? Kramnik, Anand? Aronian perhaps or an "outsider"? And Svidler is not very likely to finish last but someone has! I think a few can finish last either shared or sole. I will let my deliberations know in a day or two :)

Oct-13-09  DCP23: <lostemperor: <DCP23> when was/is that in London?>

London is Kramnik's and Carlsen's next event after the Tal Memorial. It'll take place in December 2009 in London.

You can read about it here, for example:

jessicafischerqueen: <Yoda: Not Just A Little Guy Who Talks Funny>

That is simply astonishing!!

OK I'm very excited by the <Monkey Ranker> you just showed me.

How is that different from the Monkey being shown a chess position for one second and then instantly being able to reproduce it with 100% accuracy?

Doesn't this mean that Monkeys could play chess if you could manage to teach them about <en passant>?

It makes sense that they have instant reliable short term memory and totally reliable spatial recognition, so that they don't get their faces bitten off by a leopard, or by Jane Goodall, perhaps.

<Yoda: You Are Wise>- thank you so much. Now I don't feel nearly as bad about having lost to the <Monkey Ranker> in every single category in every single one of <YouRang's> contests.

Whew!

lostemperor: <jessicafischerqueen> I think the monkey/chimp can produce a chess position accurately given a second to look. It can also learn and produce a whole opening repertoire in a few minutes. Can the monkey play chess after that? I don't know if there have been enough research done about it. It can learn the walk of the pieces. Taking like en passant also. The question is just how far can the monkey get in planning?

As for monkeys' long term memory; elephants are also known for their excellent long term memory! Maybe monkeys have them too The national geographic documentary showed some remarkable annimal qualities! :)

lostemperor: <Queen Jessica> and since monkeys cannot speak a sophisticated language as humans, it would be very difficult to teach them chess within their life time. Having said this, it hit me, the answer to your question: <Doesn't this mean that Monkeys could play chess if you could manage to teach them about <en passant>?> is: For monkeys playing chess is peanuts (if they don't go bananas :-))
