(This is important and commendable work) |

Nov-06-17
 | | Tabanus: <ideal would be a text/CSV file with FIDE ID numbers in sequence.> Chess-Results has two options: export it to Excel, or export it to pdf. Only the names, no FIDE Id. (e. g. http://chess-results.com/tnr111685...., click on Show tournament details) |

Nov-06-17
 | | Tabanus: <Looks like TWIC is tab-separated Fields> No idea. TWIC has not 29 but 50 players, why not 50 in CG? With games linked to each player. In the big swisses, many good GM's end up worse than place no. 50. <lot of work for very little reward.> For me? Yes. <is anybody ever going to benefit from such heroic efforts as arranging 255 players correctly in order?> Well, 50 players in correct order would not harm. Example: looking up a certain player - how did he/she fare? "Oh, no. 40 with 6 points, same as Shirov, and beat Ganguly ... oh, and with a queen sac!" But then the top-50 list should be trustworthy. In CG, not even the top 5 are trustworthy (applies now to years about 2000-2014). It can still be remedied, but if another 15 years passes ... yes, Now's the Time. On the other hand, to what extent should CG be a results provider. There are other concerns. |

 | | Tabanus: <Only the names, no FIDE Id.> Chess-Results does have FIDE Id's, but only (perhaps there are exceptions) in their Starting rank list and Alphabetical list. |

 | | chessgames.com: We were processing some new game uploads; please note that it is improper to end a game with "½-½" — PGN designates draws with 1/2-1/2 and nothing else. |

Pick any event, then with Chrome just cut-and-paste the result table into Emacs and you'll find a tab-separated table layout. E.g. here's Norway 2017

(Still wondering about verbatim mode on <CG> fwiw...) On the other hand, if you would prefer all the results in a CBV-file I see Mark has left this note: <The Week in Chess Magazine
Send a £30 donation via Paypal and contact me via email (Email Mark Crowther - mdcrowth@btinternet.com) I'll send you an address for a cbv file of my personal copy of every issue of the games in one database. Over 2 million games.> Does <CB>'s CBV format allow for leader-board tables to be included? (I haven't tried to get that fancy)

 | | Tabanus: Phony, the bolt from the blue!
<CG> You can safely merge also Chinese Team Championship (2016) with the Chinese Chess League (2016). Under the latter name, but all the kibitzing is in the former. On the short-lived "Chinese Team Championship" event, taking place from July 28 - August 4, https://chess24.com/en/watch/live-t... has it right again, and also http://www.chess-results.com/tnr231.... The games from that event does not seem to be in the CG db. |

 | | Phony Benoni: <gauer> In response to your question about Game Collection: 1973 US open (supplemental games) I'm working on Chicago 1973 right now. There is no crosstable, so I won't until I have finished going through the bulletins whether any of the games in your collection are from the Open. I have added your collection to my list of games to be checked. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.. Games dated November or December are likely from the Chicago USCF International, held November 28 - December 9, 1973. There is a report in "Chess Life & Review", March 1974, p. 157. Players included: 1 Norman Weinstein 8.0/11
2 Gudmundur Sigurjonsson 7.5/11
3 Nikola Karaklajic 7.0/11
4 James tarjan 7.0/11
5 Andrew SOltis .5.5/11
6 Kim Commons 5.5/11
7 Zvonko Vransevic 5.5/11
8 Craig Chellstorp 5.0/11
9 Greg DeFotis 5.0/11
10 Lawrence Kaufman 4.0/11
11 Andrew Karklins 3.5/11
12 Duncan Suttles 3.5/11
From the games published in CL&R, I can verify that
Soltis vs Suttles, 1973 in your collection is from that tournament. |

 | | Phony Benoni: I don't check in here often enough, so I'll just give a quick update on where the US Open project stands. Earlier this year, I ran into some confusion over whether games had been submitted or not. Therefore, I haven't submitted any new games for several months now, waiting for my queue to clear out. Once that is done, I'll clean up the old tournaments and start sending in new games. In particular, Boston 1970, Ventura 1971, and Atlantic City 1972 are ready to go. In personal news, I will be retiring from the Library at the end of this year, so I'll be spending even more time on this. If that's possible. Is it any wonder I take a break now and then? |

Nov-09-17 | | brankat: It would be about time that M.Tal's Bio in CG's database is properly done. The current one, compared to many other ones, is way to sketchy for a master of Tal's stature. Misha, of all masters, does deserve better than that. |
|
Nov-09-17
 | | MissScarlett: <Here is my best shot...> Hmmm, interesting. |
|
Nov-09-17 | | zanzibar: <brankat> OK, let's agree that <CG>'s bio of Tal is abbreviated. But it contains a link to wiki's page on him.
1) So, let me ask you - what's your opinion of wiki's bio of Tal? 2) What could <CG> add/improve upon that wouldn't just be duplicating wiki's writeup? . |
|
Nov-10-17
 | | Phony Benoni: <zanzibar> Just as an example, the Alekhine biography also contains a link to the Wikipedia article about Alekhine -- and is nearly 15 times as long as the Tal biography. You could argue that Alekhine is the more important figure historically, but surely not to that extent. The simple fact is that there were editors interested in doing an extensive Alekhine biography. When there is similar interest in expanding the Tal biography, it will grow. And should. |

Nov-10-17 | | zanzibar: <<Phony> The simple fact is that there were editors interested in doing an extensive Alekhine biography.> Yes, this is both a strength and a weakness of <CG> - the allowance for contributions, and the unevenness thereof. <When there is similar interest in expanding the Tal biography, it will grow. And should.> OK, I agree of course that Tal's treatment is rather brief, and his importance is on par with Alekhine. But the fundamental question isn't one of importance, but one of <CG> vs. <Wiki>. That's an issue I've (and I'm sure others) have raised from long ago. E.g. I think <wiki> offers some notable advantages - it's history, version comparison, and talk. Not to mention the better treatment of HTML features - like verbatim mode, tables, and graphics. Now, some like <CG> because it's their "home", e.g. they feel like contributors when submitting content, even if <Wiki> has coverage. Others can pursue in-depth treatments differing from <Wiki>, or with different emphasis. And there's also contributions on <CG> which are otherwise entirely lacking on <wiki>. Then again, some might like to have "one-stop shopping", and pursue the goal of <CG> having complete coverage, just for its own sake. Lately there doesn't seem to be too many adherents of this philosophy, one might note. Myself, I believe that <CG>'s strength is the games(*) - and would like to facilitate the care and handling therein. That's why I've consistently emphasized the treatment of PGN, much to the chagrin of some fellow biographers. (*) Another major strength of <CG> is the easy and free-ranging discussions in the comments. Personally, I'd like to see a standard, somewhat minimal template of basic facts for plays/tournaments. Of course, for those with interest, elaborate of the write-ups should be allowed/encouraged. OK, I've outlined some of my thoughts on the matter - all the while avoiding the important topic of the ownership of the <CG> content - and the ability to reuse it elsewhere. <Wiki>, for example, would allow its entire Tal page to be used on <CG> wholesale, provided certain license terms are followed: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikip... . |

 | | MissScarlett: <Here is my best shot> As you'll know, the main problem lies with the position after 21.Nxg4 Bxg5?: click for larger viewWhite is winning after 22.Qxe8+ Rxe8 23.Rxe8+ Kd7 24.hxg5 (Bxg5 is also fine) Kxe8 25.Bxd6: click for larger viewThe players involved are Edward P Elliott vs John W Clark from Game Collection: US Open 1901, Excelsior = 2nd Western Champ.. Still, I can't do better. I'll submit the game, as is. |
