MissScarlett: <Since some 1923 source are there, can I assume this isn't a copyright issue?>

Not a general one, no.

My impression is that the heyday of chess coverage in British newspapers would be the 1890s and 1900s. As I mentioned recently, post-WW1 you notice a lot fewer games in print, even where you still get round-by-round tournament reports. The <(London) Daily News> (whose coverage on <BNA> goes as late as 1960) is an example of this. It used to be up there with the <Standard> and <Morning Post> for game scores, but its coverage of Liverpool and Margate has barely a game.

Feb-17-24  Alan McGowan: I have looked through the early history of the Berliner Schachgesellschaft. Munk is mentioned a few times, but there is no first name or initial, and no mention of his death.

Just in case this is useful for <jnpope>, here is some information that comes after a short paragraph about the appointed board in January 1871, including 'Schriftsführer Munk."

Es kam ein Vorgabeturnierin funf Klassen zustande. Die Vorgaben waren gering, nämlich der Unzug, Bauer und Zug, Bauer und zwei Züge und Springer. Die Einteilung war:

1. Klasse: JH Zukertort
2. Klasse: Lichtenstein, Munk, Sander, Schulten. 3. Klasse: Behrens, Littauer, Wladimiroff
4. Klasse: Uwellis, Horwitz, Lewinson, Liebermann, Richter, Rohde, Trobach, Wette 5. Klasse: Hanssen, Heilbronn, Lewin, Marcus, Peltin, Zeiseweiss

Es siegten: 1. Zukertort +19, 2. Munk +18, 3. Littauer 16½.

From: Geschichte der Berliner Schachgesellschaft: festschrift zur feier ihres hundertjährigen Bestehens von Otta Zander, Charlottenburg [1928].

Incidentally, re his comments about Munk's apparent marriage in Berlin:

his engagement (Verlobt) to Clara Berwin is recorded in the Berlin Börsen-Zeitung, morning edition, Friday, 3 January 1873 (middle column, Familien Nachrichten). It shows Hugo Munk (Posen-Berlin). https://www.deutsche-digitale-bibli...

his marriage (Vereherlicht)is recorded in the same newspaper, morning edition, Thursday, 15 May 1873. https://www.deutsche-digitale-bibli...

Addresses have been found, but nothing that ties him to the Schachgesellschaft.

Tabanus: Short - Sax Candidates Eighthfinal (1988)

I changed the venue for these matches from Hilton hotel to the convention centre across the street. Which apparently was also owned by Hilton.

MissScarlett: I signed up for a week's free newspaper access via Ancestry (they're in cahoots with newspapers.com) so I could check the <Manchester Guardian> coverage of Liverpool and Margate. In addition, they have the <Daily Telegraph> which also had some coverage. Alas, no new games. But the game J Mieses vs Maroczy, 1923, for which Britbase has no source, turned up in the <Manchester Evening News>.
Feb-18-24  stone free or die: Thanks <Missy> - I found a couple of games in the Australian press that Britbase might have missed.

The Australian press noted some of their games came from Burn's <Field> reporting, and iirc there was also mention of <Daily Telegraph>.

Confessional - I'm not as sharp as some here on getting every detail right as I work. I'd describe my style more as putting a new tire on - tighten the lugs loosely, then a couple of arounds to snug 'em up tight.

Right now I've just got the first round down - and have to recheck all my work - so take the Britbase comments with a grain of salt.

(Still have to look at New Zealand and Malaysia press reports - you know, the old searching under the streetlight cliche)

Feb-18-24  stone free or die: Snark wasn't invented yesterday y'know...

< “Punch” Has a sly dig at chess players in a recent issue. Speaking of an earthqn3ke that occurred in the Midlands, the ygroat London weekly says: “The slight earth tremor felt last week is believed to have been duo to a chess player at Liverpool tournament making a move without giving the usual three hours’ notice.” >

Feb-18-24  stone free or die: RE: <BNA & Liverpool (1923)>

Requesting feedback help from anyone (you know who) with BNA access before I go through more games....

Does the following link take you to the <Louis--Yates Apr 2 (R2) 32 0-1> game?

https://britishnewspaperarchive.co....

Also - is there a group photograph at the top of the page?

Thanks in advance.

MissScarlett: Yes. Also the <Dawbarn - Holmes> game from that round. There's a picture at page top but not a photo, and not of chess players.
Feb-18-24  stone free or die: And if I may...

Does this link have the <Thomas--Spence> game which Britbase only sources with Gillam?

https://britishnewspaperarchive.co....

I'd like to get the primary source if possible.

MissScarlett: Yes. I suspect the <Liverpool Post & Mercury> - or, at least, relevant parts of it - were only digitised by the <BNA> fairly recently. It features on newspapers.com, too, but I suppose Saunders doesn't use that site.
Feb-19-24  stone free or die: Once again many thanks for the help <Missy>.

I think <zanzibar>'s adage applies - <"the last biographer to cover a tournament should, theoretically, have the best version">.

This isn't based on relative merit of the biographers, though that's an acknowledged factor - it's assumed that all do the best job available to them. Having a previous version establishes the starting line.

Consider, as you pointed out, sources should improve as time goes by. So, after retracing the previous biographer's work, one should be able to move the football by a few yards at least (to mix as many metaphors in as I can).

Feb-19-24  stone free or die: Request for more help -

Later I'll post all the BNA links I think point to games (and use the url to yield page numbers).

But at the moment, I finally noticed that Britbase has a couple of ending studs that I mistook as start stubs:

<
1923.04.03 A00 11 (R4) 1-0 Thomas -- Holmes
1923.04.05 A00 8 (R7) 1-0 Yates -- Wahltuch >

Could sources for these be found?

* * * * *

I think the following has the group photo - does it?

https://britishnewspaperarchive.co....

And can this be clipped and shipped out to the chess world?

.

Tabanus: Timman - Salov Candidates Eighthfinal (1988). I corrected the match rules for these 8-finals to ...

if 3-3, two more games. If 4-4, <one> 1 hour game, and if 4½-4½, <one> 30 min game. If 5-5, 15 min games until a winner.

Feb-19-24  Chessist: Thomas-Spencer "Notes by Burn" (Gillam, p49) = obviously quoted from "The Field".

MissScarlett: <I think the following has the group photo - does it?>

The reproduction of the photo is too blurred to make out anyone but ghostly traces. It looks like a posed picture taken at a board before a game. Thomas, Burn, Mieses and Gunsberg are mentioned as being seated, but there's at least one spectral figure standing. Regardless, quite unusable.

Tabanus: Spraggett - Sokolov Candidates Eighthfinal (1988)

I could no find Sokolov's second, or if he had any. It used to be Vladimir Yurkov. I labeled the four last games (incl. the 1-hour game 9) "Rapid".

perfidious: <Tab>, the article on St John's written by Larry Parr in the March-April 1988 number of <Chess Horizons> sheds no light on who might have seconded Sokolov, though the match was prominently mentioned throughout the piece.

Good grief, is this Chess Horizons online somewhere for issues before 2014?

  perfidious: <Tab>, if only.

Late last year, I came across some print copies of various <CH>es which were in mothballs, mostly from the 1980s, when I lived in that state and wrote a little for the magazine. If you need any info, by all means ask; I will likely publish a list of those copies I have to hand.

  Tabanus: OK.

I see some articles are archived at https://web.archive.org/web/2002122.... It's probably possible to find a little more at https://web.archive.org/web/2003010....

Feb-19-24  stone free or die: <Those interested in further exploring the history of Chess Horizons can check out the Boylston Chess Club’s bound anthologies, which encompass much of its forty-five year history. >

http://www.masschess.org/chess_hori...

And some other issues available online (did <tab> cover these already?):

http://www.masschess.org/chess_hori...

<George Mirijanian> is a long time chess denizen involved in documenting a lot of early NE chess. He's still active here:

https://www.facebook.com/WachusettC...

It might be useful to ask him if there's a possibility of getting very early CH issues online.

(I'm not exactly hopeful about this, since it hasn't already been done. But other local chess organizations have managed to pull it off)
