 | | MissScarlett: I dslike all this toadying and deferential attitude around Winter. On behalf of <cg>, tell him to @#$% off. Not in a bad way, just as a statement of independence. Excuse the colloquialisms, but we ain't his nigger, we ain't his bitch. |

 | | MissScarlett: <It seems <Missy> isn't the only one fixated with Staunton (or is s/he?)... Nineteen mentions on the current Chess History home page.> I don't know if Townsend is working on another Staunton book, or we're seeing all the fruits of his continuing labour via Winter. The Staunton origins question - for want of a better expression - is an intriguing, not to say nagging mystery that's difficult to leave behind. But at the distance of two centuries and a handful of documentary traces, it's more than optimistic to expect any satisfactory resolution. The wasted hours... |

Feb-28-24 | | Retireborn: <MissS> I consider "ain't" to be very vulgar. Still, it ain't as bad as people writing "gonna" and "wanna" as if they were real words. |

 | | MissScarlett: Innit? |

 | | jnpope: How can you consider this vulgar?

Feb-28-24 | | stone free or die: <<Retireborn> <MissS> I consider "ain't" to be very vulgar. Still, it ain't as bad as people writing "gonna" and "wanna" as if they were real words.> I appreciate the dry ironic humor here. Subtle, very subtle. |

Feb-28-24 | | stone free or die: <<Missy> On behalf of <cg>, tell him to @#$% off.> No royal "we" here?!?
<Excuse the colloquialisms, but we ain't his nigger, we ain't his bitch.> Ya know, you aren't the only one trying to "sneak" one in: https://www.chesshistory.com/winter... But you know the expression, let sleeping dogs lie. . |

 | | perfidious: <Retireborn>, how 'bout Ima, as in 'Ima go to Tunica'? |
|
Feb-28-24 | | stone free or die: Oh yeah, <Missy>, there's a broken link on the <Agatha> page: https://www.chesshistory.com/winter... It happens to be from <Liverpool (1923)>, so we best get that one fixed asap. |

 | | MissScarlett: <Czech Quiz Time with Chess Grandmasters! | ft. Vishy Anand, Vidit, Keymer, Leko, l'Ami and Bartel> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9iS...
Gotta say they did pretty well, but I think it's clear that in a pure chess history quiz, a team from <cg> would crush them. Show Keymer a picture of <George Atwood>, he won't know. |
|
Feb-28-24 | | stone free or die: < Fixed.> "Yeah, I noticed that it was", he said with a chuckle. (Could <Focus> have been right this one time?!) |

 | | MissScarlett: I said it before, I'll say it again - I AM NOT SHE. |
|
Feb-28-24 | | stone free or die: The he that wasn't she or the she that was he they pondered, oh well, no bother to us, we all said. |

 | | MissScarlett: Ever wonder why nobody found the name EDWARD Winter in the British birth records? |
|
Feb-29-24 | | stone free or die: From <chess.com>'s <Edward Winter does not exist?> Vease, Jul 2012 writes:
<I am sure he is a real person, he practically invented flame wars back in the 1980's when arguing with various chess luminaries in the pages of CHESS magazine and his own Chess Notes newsletter. He's known as 'The hermit of geneva' which tells you why you won't find his photo image anywhere. What always intrigued me about him is that he is presumably English, yet has lived in Switzerland for many years and has the money to be able to purchase many rare chess artifacts from around the world. I assume he is a tax exile but how he came by his wealth is a complete mystery. [later post]
He was apparently a young man in his 20's when he started Chess Notes so how he came to be in Geneva and already accumulated a huge chess library is extremely mysterious.> https://www.chess.com/forum/view/ge... The one thing I know for sure is that <Edward Winter> is not a man in his 20's, at least, not anymore. |
|
Feb-29-24 | | stone free or die: And for reference sake - here is an archived version of Hans Rees' <Hermit of Geneva>: https://web.archive.org/web/2012021... Some wonder about his mental acuity, given his advanced age, but I have no doubts. I've been in Geneva, once or twice. I wonder if I ever bumped into him at the Chat Noir in Carouge, though maybe he never strayed over the Arve. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5pw...
Did you know tributaries have a handedness? The Arve is a left tribunary. |

 | | Sally Simpson: I have just received the book ''Memorable Games of British Chess' by Neil Hickman. 90 games and every game has the source from whence it came and any notes the author has used. Sometimes this list runs to 4-5 different sources. chessgames.com gets mentioned a few times and in the Source Index which runs for three pages we see 'Discussions at chessgames.'
I think this site has a lot to offer in this regard. Some of the posts to the games here are extremely good. Just under this sites mention is a glowing rec for Edward Winters site with a strong hint to anyone putting out a collection of classic games that his is a must visit site. (agreed.) Among the sources I notice one A..J. Goldsby from here gets a mention. (and of course I pop up but that is only to be expected.) |
|
Feb-29-24 | | quadrant: Re Edward Winter; there are some clues.
1. In the early 1980s he used 33 Hillcrest, Brighton, Sussex as an address for Chess Notes. (see, for example, December 1983 BCM, p519.) 2. The dedication is his book about Capablanca was 'To the memory of Mary A. Winter, née Martin. 3. Someone has already noted the 1955 birth of Edward J. Winter in Surrey. Perhaps that is your man...Jay Gee. |

 | | Sally Simpson: Hi quadrant,
I went down to 33 Hillcrest, Brighton. There is a blue commemorate plaque on the wall. it said 'See Chess Note 99' ---
I gave up wondering who he was a long time ago. His site is good, here and there sometimes link up quite well together. |

 | | Sally Simpson: That picture was taken during day when the current owners remove it as it was attracting fanatics (that will be you lot) and tourist buses. They put it back up at night when it is lit by a light with a lava lamp effect and is the envy of the neighbours. |
|
Mar-01-24
 | | MissScarlett: The neighbours at #35 worry that #33 is taking at least £10K off the price of their house. Why can't we have a nice Asian family move in, they're probably thinking. |
