Mar-01-24  stone free or die: Good old <Missy>... sneaking in another one. Got a song for ya -

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P5Z...

Now - go back and zoom out of <Tab>'s google map view and you'll see it's #35 who's out of sync with the rest of the neighborhood.

E.g. the only house with a oversized dormer, full front yard parking lot, and stucco exterior.

I can understand wanting a little more parking, sure, but do it like #31 and leave some grass out front.

.

Mar-01-24  stone free or die: I think <Sally>'s posts should come with an official CG court jester icon behind the green pawn.

Something like this:

https://i.pinimg.com/736x/3c/91/54/...

Yeah, that works.

Mar-02-24  BarakSaltz: The following Carl Schlechter penned chess column in "Allgemeine Sport-Zeitung" (01.31.1897,p107) appears to have mistakenly indicated the Dutch athlete Jaap Eden as having played White in the intriguing Advance Variation French Defense game against Adolf Schwarz.

https://anno.onb.ac.at/cgi-content/...

Mar-02-24  stone free or die: EDOchess has Schwarz playing in this tournament in Vienna in 1896 (no Eden in sight):

http://www.edochess.ca/tournaments/...

Only Di Felice and Gaige are listed as sources.

Mar-02-24  stone free or die:

<Jaap Eden plays the entire game in the style of a first-class master>

<Jaap Eden spielt die ganze Partie im Style eines Meisters ersten Ranges>

Mar-02-24  stone free or die: RE <Jaap Eden>

I might do a little more researching on this, but I've already found this interesting tidbit on the matter...

<*(Vienna chess matches.) The great Bolalmaster tournament ended with the 14th round after weeks of fighting. Eight players who were used to stomping and fidgeting, Adolf Albin, Hugo Fähndrich , Max Judd , Arthur Kaufmann , Albert Mandelbaum, Georg Marco, Adolf Schwarz and Jaap Eden , under which pseudonym a tried and tested matador hides, entered this dispute.>

<Fremden-Blatt N6 (1897-01-06) p6>

https://books.google.com/books?id=c...

Maybe by comparing the list of players in <Fremden-Blatt> vs. <EDOchess> the identity of the fictitious player <Jaap Eden> can be determined?

.

Mar-02-24  BarakSaltz: The Advance Variation of the French Defense was less played between 1890-1910 than in adjacent decades.

Adolf Albin played Advance French on occasion.

Mar-02-24  stone free or die: So... is <Jaap Eden> = <Adolf Zinkl>?!?
Mar-02-24  BarakSaltz: It could be "Lokalmeisterturnier" rather than "Bolalmeisterturnier".

Excellent work on finding the Jaap Eden reference in "Fremden-Blatt". Apparently, Jaap Eden didn't play the game, but was a sort of prank identity used. I might have thought that somebody at "Allgemeine Sport-Zeitung" might have pulled a prank on Carl Schlechter.

Mar-02-24  stone free or die: <Barak> I think whoever it was (likely Zinkl), they entered the tournament using the pseudonym - so I don't think Schlechter was specifically targetted.
Mar-02-24  BarakSaltz: Edo Ratings indicates Adolf Zinkl as also known as Jaap Eden.

http://www.edochess.ca/players/p540...

Mar-02-24  stone free or die: Might as well mention another sighting of <Jaap Eden>:

<Name: Zinkl, Adolf Julius Leopold
Also known as: Jaap Eden>

http://www.edochess.ca/players/p540...

Which also made it into Thulin's list of pseudonyms:

https://www.anders.thulin.name/SUBJ...

.

Mar-02-24  BarakSaltz: The game is available on this site:

A Zinkl vs A Schwarz, 1896

Mar-02-24  Chessist: It has long been known that the pseudonym "Jaap Eden" was used by Adolf Zinkl, see only Gaige, Chess Personalia, page 479. Any further mention of this is a waste of time.
Mar-02-24  stone free or die: <<Chessist> Any further mention of this is a waste of time.>

Not sure I agree with this assessment, but I definitely agree that the pseudonym was well known previously - just not by me.

I think mentioning Thulin was worthwhile though, as it's a good source if you don't have Gaige.

(As for Gaige - I don't have it, but I do wonder if he cites primary sources for his identification.)

jnpope: <z>, I thought you downloaded the Gaige files?
Mar-02-24  stone free or die: I started to, not sure I finished. But it's still not worked into my regular routine.

We started with a game and an unknown (to me), so I just started searching for more info. I think the process is useful - go to EDOchess first when you can, then orient and search primary sources, etc., etc.

As for Gaige stuff, "we" need to get it OCR'ed and bound for easy access. Something "we" also need to do for O'Keefe's clipping too (well, OCR'ing, but maybe not binding 'em together).

MissScarlett: Putting together my Game Collection: Gone too soon... prompts me to raise the case of Nikolai Evgenevich Loran (kibitz #1)

<WilhelmThe2nd: The death date given here for Loran reads "died May-1919, 33 years old". Does anyone know the source for this?

The Berlin journal 'Novaya Russkaya Kniga', in its March, 1922 issue (page 38), notes:

"Nik. Evg. Loran, formerly an employee of the Odessa newspapers and editor-publisher of the magazine 'Shakhmaty', fled from Odessa to Romania in February 1921. At the present time he is working in the editorial office of 'Bukharestskikh Novostei' ['The Bucharest News'].">

Who needs BCM etc. :/

Mar-03-24  Chessist: Gaige cites, among other things, his sources on Zinkl:

https://anno.onb.ac.at/cgi-content/...

Page 18 the game in question, Zinkl as White:

https://anno.onb.ac.at/cgi-content/...

Mar-03-24  stone free or die: Thanks <Chessist>, it's always good to have sources!

The Gaige source, as well as your game source, are both from a 1911 source. That's notable.

Does Gaige list any other tournaments that <Jaap Eden> played in?

As far as I've been able to find, there's only one tournament where Zinkl used that pseudonym.

Does Gaige mention either of these other pseudonyms that I found used in that tournament -

<St. Louis> or <Ungar>?

I'm pretty sure that <St. Louis> is <Maxx Judd>, which leaves <Ungar> being <Hugo Fähndrich>.

Which makes sense, as Ungar = Hungarian, and HF was living in Hungary at the time.

(FWIW- neither of those pseudonyms show up in Thulin, unless I missed them).

I'm still wondering why the players decided to use pseudonyms for that particular tournament.

  jnpope: Taubenhaus - Heilpern (1887)

<WilhelmThe2nd> dug up the missing games from <Tygodnik Illustrowany>. Was this a fixed number of exhibition games (as the loser of the match won the ninth and final game which is very uncommon way to end a match post-1850).

<Jean Defuse> noted that <Die Brüderschaft>, 3 December 1887 gave the results as Heilpern +4 -2 =4 Taubenhaus vs J Heilpern, 1887 (kibitz #9), which seems to indicate a missing tenth game, however it would be a draw, which would still be an uncommon way to end a match.

Or was this a five games-up match that terminated prematurely? Can anyone provide any additional information regarding the match conditions?

Mar-04-24  WilhelmThe2nd: <j> The match was supposed to be first to five wins but Taubenhaus had to return to Paris after the ninth game (there was no tenth game). I will try to post some contemporary reports tomorrow.
