Mar-11-24 | | stone free or die: I see, from <ZanChess>, that Gillam says he has <"148 games, and part games, in total">. . |
Mar-11-24 | | stone free or die: In principle, <Z-base> should always have at least as many as <Unique( CG + CB + 365 )> has - at least at the time the tournament was processed. Often I got very useful help with other <CG>'ers generous enough to share their time and (usually) Gillam with me. (I think <Pawn and Two> and <Paint My Dragon> come to mind - apologies if I forget others who helped) |

 | | jnpope: <BTW - Shouldn't <London (1883)> have a ref (or credit) to <zanchess>?> Should it? I built everything in the current bio except the <Introduction> text, so if they borrowed something from <zanchess> then it should definitely get some credit, the first iteration of that bio page was created on 07/01/16 by (system), so probably Daniel? <Tabanus> modified the original bio on 11/21/16 (looks like some xtab corrections). Since 02/26/22 I'm the only user who has worked over that bio; several times including rebuilding the xtabs and the additional material outside of the <Introduction> section and adding the <Sources> used. |

 | | jnpope: <stone free or die: Who's "they"?> They be ChessBase, the site <MissScarlett> was attempting to taunt. |
Mar-11-24 | | stone free or die: RE: <London (1883)> <Should it?> I thought we used some of it not too long ago on the Bistro. FWIW - the links on <Zan Chess> should all be working again. Let me know if that's not the case. |
Mar-11-24
 | | jnpope: I did fix four games that you had noticed were wrong at CG:
Biographer Bistro
You/Zanchess are now mentioned in the <Credits> section for your contribution. |
Mar-11-24
 | | jnpope: <FWIW - the links on <Zan Chess> should all be working again. Let me know if that's not the case.> Is there a single/large PGN download link for all the material? |
Mar-11-24 | | stone free or die: Yes, <Z-base> was initially based on Reichhelm's Fifty: https://zanchess.wordpress.com/2016... I'll update it with the 1923 tournaments + misc, but that's the most comprehensive version published. |
Mar-11-24
 | | jnpope: Thanks. I downloaded a copy of <Z-base-v04> so I no longer have an excusing for not checking it. |
Mar-11-24 | | stone free or die: OK, I'll fasten my seat-belts - "it's going to be a bumpy night" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3vE...
(For me I expect!) |
Mar-11-24
 | | jnpope: <MissScarlett>, <Z>'s database has the same 88 complete games (along with 4 additional partials and the consultation game played at the event). Being that I've already pilfered the 9 missing games from CB, would you like them uploaded to CG? I only found a source for Mortimer-Mackenzie, so we'd still have eight games sourced to ChessBase instead of a contemporary piece of literature, but if we can live with CB as a source I'll upload the missing games. |
Mar-11-24 | | stone free or die: FWIW - <Z-base>'s version of Bradford pathetically omits Source tags. It (and we) should do better from here on. |
Mar-11-24
 | | jnpope: Excusing?
You've got to love cell phone autocomplete plus late night postings. |
Mar-11-24 | | stone free or die: No excusing! |
Mar-11-24 | | BarakSaltz: Chessbites and Chessbase have Mortimer-Mackenzie 0-1 1888 Bradford, but neither Chesstempo nor 365Chess does. Tarrasch commenting on 6. ... e4 in Albin vs Tarrasch, 1895 in "Deutsches Wochenschach" 10.13.1895, vol. 11, n. 41, p.360, indicates: "First played by Gunsberg in a tournament games (1883 London) and later employed by Steinitz in the match with Zukertort.". The C E Ranken vs Gunsberg, 1883 and Zukertort vs Steinitz, 1886 games differed from Albin vs Tarrasch, 1895 or Mortimer-Mackenzie 0-1 1888 Bradford by having both sides castle on their 5th moves. |
Mar-11-24 | | stone free or die: I'd like to get hold of Gillam's work on Bradford (1888). I'll bet most of the extra bits he has can be found on BNA. I think a second pass over <Z-base> would have more focus on primary sources. (Originally I was more focused on getting <CG> more complete, and getting complete and correct xtabs for each tournament. The former goal was dependent on Daniel allowing bulk uploads - something we started, but Daniel dropped after the inevitable first glitch was hit.) |
Mar-11-24 | | MFH: I would like to suggest imporovements and disambiguation to the players names "Popov". There is "Popov", there is at least one GM Ivan Popov, there are alt least two Georgi Popov: G.A.Popov born 1937(?), GMC, after whom the Popov Attack is named(?), a different G.Popov born 1941, and others... (The wikipedia page of the Bulgarian ICCF team had a link to G.Popov who is a football player...) I'm new here and don't know where/how we might maybe collaboratively aggregate some information and clarification. |
Mar-12-24
 | | jnpope: https://www.chessgames.com/perl/che... 46 players named Popov. Looks like most have been identified. |
Mar-12-24
 | | jnpope: This is definitely the forum to post any additional information. |
Mar-12-24 | | stone free or die: OK, I can't resist commenting that I don't particularly like the <GMC> designation - it's not widely used and so I consider it a bit obscure. I admit I was actually scratching my head until I realized it stands for <GM Correspondence>. How obscure is it? Well, do a google search on <GMC chess> and there's nothing about correspondence on the first page. (Even with the hated (by me) infinite scroll, it deep inside - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jaros... where it's given by:
<In 1985, Jaroslav Ježek was awarded the International Correspondence Chess Grandmaster (GMC) title.>) My preference?
<ICCF GM> or <ICC GM> Then it's clear what kind of GM, and who awarded the title. |

Mar-12-24
 | | Tabanus: Dortmund (1992) and Dortmund (1992), sigh. |
Mar-12-24
 | | jnpope: I'd rename the first one, Dortmund (1992), to "20th Sparkassen Conress, Dortmund" (and I'd do the same for all the Sparkassen sponsored tournaments). https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dor... |
Mar-12-24
 | | Stonehenge: The problem was the year. I simply made another tid: Dortmund (1981). |
Mar-12-24
 | | jnpope: Ah, I didn't look closely enough. |
Mar-12-24
 | | Tabanus: Me neither. I was looking for Jeroen Piket in Dortmund 1992, but could not find him! |
