AylerKupp: team white <<kutztown46> I try to refrain from using it for chess engine analysis because it slows the computer down for other things.>

Check your GUI. I run Arena 3.0 and it has an option to run the chess engine at low priority (Engines > Options > Low priority) . I run engine analyses in the background on my wife's computer and she doesn't complain about things slowing down. But I do have to disable my virus checker (Norton) because then things do slow down.

The Chessbase interface has a similar setting under Engine > Create UCI Engine > Priority. Check the "Below Normal" box. I don't much experience with Chessbase GUI but I have been running Critter 1.6a with 4 threads at low priority and have experience a little (but not much) slowdown in response while running Word, Excel, Outlook, and several instances of IE in the background. And that's on a pokey 32-bit, 2.4 GHz, quad core computer. So now I'm trying it using only 3 threads for the engine and I don't see <any> degradation in user response. Obviously that will make your analysis go somewhat slower but, hey, 3 threads are better than 0 threads. And, if I remember correctly, you have a 6-core computer then 5 threads are definitely better than 0 threads. At least until your wife complains. :-)

And, if you don't feel comfortable having her use the computer with the virus checker disabled, then back down to 4 threads leaving 1 for the virus checker and 1 for whatever applications she's running.

And, yes, I second <bigpeta66>. All you need to do is transfer the appropriate *.exe file from one computer to another using the USB drive. No program installation is necessary. I have a separate folder/subfolder for each engine/engine version and each time that a new version comes out I download it into my desktop computer and then transfer it to my laptop computer using the USB drive and that's all that it's needed, other than obviously installing the engine into your GUI.

AylerKupp: team white <OhioChessFan> No, I was referring to the attitude and actions of many of the players and not to any criticism or lack thereof of GMVA. From a selfish perspective I'm glad that he didn't play as well as I think he's capable of playing since that allowed us to win. :-)

AylerKupp: team white <crawfb5> Thanks for the reminder. After the game ends (whenever it does), refrain from posting until the posts from both teams are merged together, otherwise any new posts that you make will be lost. And fear not, chessgames.com is pretty good at merging the two sets of posts quickly.
Sep-11-13  hms123: team white Thanks to everyone for a great game.

chessgames.com: Well played! Congratulations to all involved.
Sep-11-13  cro777: A draw can be obtained not only by repeating moves, but also by playing strong moves.

Thanks to all on Team White and congratulations to Team Black!

Sep-11-13  morfishine: It was a real pleasure to team up with old friends and to have the opportunity to make new friends! The game was a real education to myself in a variation I've rarely ventured into.

Great effort Team White and very well played Team Black!

*****

Sep-11-13  WinKing: Good job Team White! A great effort by everyone. It was *truly* a pleasure working with all of you.

Kudos to Team Black on a fine performance & for withstanding everything we could throw their way - congratulations!

Special thanks to <AK> for keeping the team on track with the ATSS. We would have been lost without you.

Looking forward to working with many of you again at the GM Challenge which starts next week.

Sep-11-13  Nickster: <YouRang: team black I'm thinking that 33...h5 might have thwarted white's plans.

For some reason, that original line that we had in the sticky (where we delayed ...h5) seemed to be more trappy for black.

I wouldn't be surprised if the folks on team white are at least debating whether or not to offer a draw.>

Team White was aware this was drawn all along. By reading some of the posts I see that <kwid> was insulted that we refused the draw offer. I believe that black's offer was made <one move> too early. Delaying 33...h5 would have been an inaccuracy which I was hoping you would fall for. But I see that <kwid> had seen all ... I suggested that we offer a draw after 33...h5 but Team White decided to play a few more moves.

Sep-11-13  Nickster: I'm reading that Team Black believed that white has winning chances after 31.Kd1. This is the first move I looked at and well here's a re-post:

<<morfishine: <Nickster> BTW: Whats your best effort with 31.Kd1? I've been looking it over: I'd rather keep some hope of a miss step by Black and not force the capture of the a-pawn just yet, as long as there isn't a fatal flaw.>

31.Kd1

click for larger view

This strange looking move is one of the first things I looked at. The point is that while black must waste one tempo protecting against back rank mate. White takes the opportunity to put the King on c2 protecting the b3 pawn. But there is a price to pay. The white King is now farther away from the action.

31...f5!

click for larger view

With the white King farther away Black can now create a passed pawn of their own. Black will easily find this move.

Four lines here:

A- 32.Ra2 Rxb3 (32...fxe4 is also good enough to draw) 33.Kc2 (33.exf5 Rxc3 34.Rxa5 e4 is equal) 33...Rb5 34.exf5 Kf7 is equal.

B- 32.exf5 Rxb3 33.Kc2 (33.Ra2 transposes to line A) 33...a4 There many lines in this position but I could not find a way for white to get an advantage.

C- 32.Rd5 Rxb3 33.Kc2 (all other moves allow 33...Rxc3 equal) 33...a4 Too many white moves here. I I could not find a way for white to get an advantage.

D- 32.Kc2 fxe4 33.Rd5 (33.Re2 Kf7 34.Rxe4 Ke6 is equal) 33...Rf8

This position has been analyzed in other posts here. The black rook infiltrates munching up the king side pawns. Once again no way to an advantage was found.>

I just don't see any way that white can possibly win this.

AylerKupp: <Final Analysis Tree spreadsheet (ATSS) Update, Sep-11-13>

The final ATSS is ready for downloading from the following RapidShare link. This download link is also posted in the Sticky.

http://rapidshare.com/files/3096903...

This final version of the ATSS contains all the posted analyses through Sep-09-13, 21:00 USA EST, just before 36.Kc3 was posted. It contains 860 analyses.

Well, all fun things must end someday, and the fat lady has finally sung. I hope that you all enjoyed playing this game as much as I did and that it was a fun learning experience.

I made the following changes to this final version of the BOB-4 ATSS:

1. I updated all the page numbers for all the posted moves to reflect the merged comments. This will make it easier to find the analyses leading up to a move of interest and all the cursing afterwards.

2. I added the number of votes, % of players voting, winning move voting %, and draw offer voting % for Black.

3. I added a chart showing the % of draw offer voting percentage for both teams with each move. Personally, I was curious, and perhaps you were also.

I hope to have a new and upgraded version of the ATSS available in 2 – 3 weeks and I hope that you will download it, try its new feature, and let me know what you think. I'll post its availability for downloading in this site and in the Chessgames Challenge: S Williams vs The World, 2013 site since I suspect that many of the players in this game will likely be playing in that game also. I promise that you will find it "interesting" and maybe even useful.

Once again, for all Team White players, I enjoyed being your teammate.

Sep-11-13  YouRang: Thanks team white. Good game, and I'll look forward to reviewing the combined comments when I get time.
Sep-11-13  M.Hassan: I think we did very well(team White). Not castling and drawing. This game was quite educational for me and I sincerely thank particularly the hard working players of this team and generally everybody.
Sep-11-13  YouRang: <M.Hassan: I think we did very well(team White).Not castling and drawing.>

Personally, I think white might have made things more difficult for us if they did castle at the right time.

If I recall correctly, we were more worried about 21.O-O than the 21.Rd2 that was played.

Sep-11-13  capafan: Congratulations to all from Team Black...a well-played game.
Sep-12-13  blue wave: <OCF> That Sicilian song - that is beutiful. I loved it. Very funny!
Sep-12-13  DanLanglois: <AylerKupp: team white <morfishine> I'm not sure. I did not particularly enjoy the last The World vs Akobian, 2012 game. Too many players, too many egos, too much bickering of a not pleasant nature, etc. Too many silly and downright stupid things were said, and to this day I think many participants believe that it was the "brilliance" of our play that caused us to win rather than a poor performance by Akobian due to his many other scheduling conflicts.>

I'm willing to stipulate that it was not the brilliance of your play, and also that it's always the errors that define the game.

Sep-12-13  YouRang: A quick scan of the game:

It appears that team black managed to surprised white three times:

15...Bd7
16...Bxe3
24...d5

My recollection is that black was surprised a couple times:

21.Rd2 (we expected O-O)
31.Rb2 (we expected Kd1)

31.Kd1 really had us worried for quite some time. It took some time and a some analysis backtracking before we finally convinced ourselves it could be drawn.

AylerKupp: <DanLanglois> I think that you have provided evidence to justify my opinion.
Sep-12-13  DanLanglois: If you mean 'Too many players, too many egos, too much bickering of a not pleasant nature, etc.', that is, I suppose, I matter of taste. I wasn't muchly surprised at the level of such. Nor at your belittling the outcome.
Sep-12-13  DanLanglois: I looked over White's anticipation of/response to 15...Bd7, which was not a complete surprise, and deemed 'drawish', by some. Which, I guess maybe so.
Sep-12-13  whiteshark: Is <19...Qd7> the technical novelity here?
